*Cut to the chase portion of this post is isolated at the bottom, for readers who would rather skip the fluff.*

Hey guys,

A coworker was recently complaing that her home PC wont run her daughters "Barbie Fashon Show" game because of "Some sort of lack of video memory or something". After she gave me the model number of her PC (HP Pavillion 8575c) I found the *basic* specs:

Pentium 3 550Mhz
128MB Ram (384MB Max)
8MB nRiva TNT Memory (onboard) AGP2x Upgradable
20GB Hard Drive

and after my head nearly exploded, I offered to build her a comp for under $300 with some random parts and a case I had lying arround and some new stuff from newegg (all in all, the parts will cost me about $300 so my labor and my existing parts are free). I figured this would be a good time to have a go at modding - just adding a little bling a-la 'Pimp my PC'. Katie loves barbie, and her favorite color is pink, so i went to newegg looking for pink CCRTs or LEDs.... and couldn't find any. My google search didnt offer much else, as I coudlnt seem to find any with molex connectors and an inverter already in-line, and I'm not confident enough yet to wire anything for another persons PC. So....

*cut to the chase*

Does anyone know where I can find some pink case lighting that isnt too deep, so I don't make an 8-year-old's room look like a red light district?

Thanks,

You could take a look at e-bay, search for pink led, there seem to be plenty of results for LEDs that output a color that I'd consider to be in the pink range. You'd have to wire up a molex connector for them to get power, and add appropriate resistors, but I don't think that would be too difficult. Heck, on ebay you can get them prewired with resistors (for 12V), only needing to be wired up to a molex connector (and that is not that difficult at all, just find something to rob the connector from and solder the appropriate wires, usually a ground and either the yellow for 12V or red that has 5V (I may have these backwards, nothing that a quick probing with a multimeter can't resolve.)).

I say go with EL wire. You can get a fairly good looking pink and it wont be too harsh or bright. It will also give some flexability in where you mount it. I have used
http://www.coolight.com and had no issues with them. I would also recomend that if you do go with the EL wire that you pick up the 2.5 or 3.2 mm. The angel hair is real small and can be a pain to wire.

This isn't the first time that I've seen this topic here--a google brought up this:

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.

As it turns out, her favorite color is sky blue - so you all searched for me for nothing.

Thanks again though, +rep all arround.

Not for a girl...

Anyway, when I was messing around with LEDs for a project, I found that blue and red combined made a sort of pink.

Yeah, I was thinking about that (I do theatrical design and lighting and found this out the hard way when I didnt have a purple gel to cover one of my special effects lights. I tried to combine a series of blue and red lights to make a deep purple wash and just ended up with magenta.)

Anyway, the customer is always right, and who am I to argue with an 8 year-old girl? Sky blue it is, in a high gloss white case.

If you cant find a certain color of CCFL then i remember reading in Paul Capello's book, Maximum PC's Guide to Extreme PC Mods, (pick up a copy its great), that you can take celophane or transparent colored plastic wrap of the color you want and tape/attach it to a white CCFL and it will make the color you want. Just a thought.
