I'm trying to help another friend on purchasing a laptop. It will be used mainly for gaming.

Here's the list I gave him (in order based on what I felt was best):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220239
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220163
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220202
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220176

My reasoning for this order would be because:

- I'd take a c2d over an = GHz AMD any day.

- The 17" has a slower gpu (but still pretty good) in the 1st place... combine that with higher resolutions and... then again, bigger screen.

- 2.2GHz c2d obviously over the other processors

Input? Other suggestions?

I'd say the first one, but he'll be spending more like $1150 or so on it. It's only got 1GB RAM, and if he wants to game with Vista, he'll definitely need 2GB.

what is he going to do with the laptop? if he's going to use it for work/school and he takes it with him a lot, buy a 15" one. A 17" is just too big to carry around everytime.

on the technical side I'm not an expert, so I'll leave that to others to judge ;)

Why Asus? How about an HP (http://www.officedepot.com/textSearch.do?uniqueSearchFlag=true&Ntt=380750)?

Core 2 Duo T5450
250GB Hard Drive
3GB PC2-5300
GeForce 8400M GS 256MB
15.4 inch LCD
Vista Premium

For only $849

Dang, thats nice for the asking price! Its even pretty nice looking, least more so than others.

How did they pull off 3GB of memory though?

Wait I'm dumb. They make 2GB sticks don't they? lol so 1GB and 2GB equals 3GB. Duh. Still kind of weird though. But, most only come with 1GB or 2GB.

If it's being used for gaming go for at least 2gb of RAM more if you can. I have 2gb on mine and Vista idles using half that. I wouldn't limit myself to one brand so quickly, Gateway makes solid laptops, I have a new M-Series and it's sweet, well built too. HP is also a very good choice.

Personally, I couldn't ever recommend an HP laptop to a friend lol. Also, the 8400 gpu isn't too great. I'm basically aiming for the best gpu/cpu for the price since that makes the most sense to me.

You should rethink that imo. They have really turned around lately, they aren't the ****ty company they used to be. But then again, I'm a person who likes Dell (for the most part).

HP Blackbird 002? HP Verve? ...and that other one? lol I can't remember what its called. But thats a small bit of proof that they really have turned around. You'll still have to erase all those 3rd party apps and games though. But then again, you get that with any company really.

Isn't the 8400 series supposed to be one of the best gpus for laptops?

List of current/latest mobile graphic cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon X2300
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600

Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS <-The HP Laptop
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

Muahaha, nVidia SO owns the mobile graphic cards list. <3 nVidia

Anyways, that card is pretty high up there. After the 8400 series you only have the 8600 series. That list excludes quite a few graphic cards too, I left them out because they aren't the latest and greatest.

I would say go for the Dual 8600M GT, because its two of the current leading cards, but that laptop on newegg is like 4 grand or something. lol

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220239) laptop has a good proc and the second best graphics card, but it lacks in other areas, like only having 1GB of ram. I think ram is only like 40 bucks though, isn't it? Probably the easiest thing to upgrade out of all the parts.

Here's (http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-Go-7300.2145.0.html)alllmost a complete list of notebook gpus

The 8400 is a stage 3 card which doesn't seem like a good investment to me considering they're not very upgradeable.

You should tell your friend to get a bitchin' desktop instead of a mediocre laptop. Especially if he is going to want to upgrade his graphics card sometime in the future. But really, the 8400/8600 series is more than enough for a laptop. It will play just about any game aside from crysis. Maybe not on the highest setting, but its a laptop. Thats just expected. But if I can play Oblivion with an X300se on medium settings, except when heavy magic is in play, then he is fine with the mobile 8 series. If he is not fine, then he should be getting a desktop, not a laptop.

But from your list, I would go with this one.

Seems like the best bang for the buck and has a perfect review rating. Good graphics card, good proc., good ram, good sized hdd. That thing has just about everything a person could want from a laptop while trying to stay in the grand limit. Although I would of liked a C2D like you, but thats just being picky. :)
