View Full Version : Lost a friend to WoW

One of my long time closest friends is gone. We used to hang out, but now all he does is play World of Warcraft. He's been in to it for 3 months now and is waaaay gone. He sometimes wakes up and starts playing. He plays while he eats, and probably dreams about it too. He lost his fiance to WoW and he's going to probably lose his job to it, because he felt it necessary to install it on a company PC. All day at work, he yaps and yaps about it, and none of it makes any sense to me. I don't get how an adult can get so crazy about a game. It is just a game right?

BTW, I'm a Moderator now!

Well, if he loses his job then he won't be able to afford it. Maybe then he'll get a better perspective on life.

You could always drag him out by his feet and show him how much fun the real world can be. I used to play WoW nonstop because I didn't have anything better to do. I never did find anything more fun than WoW, but I don't play as much anymore because I've burnt out on it. Its just not fun anymore, so I have no reason to play.

Give him something better to do than play WoW, or just sit down with him and have a talk. If he out right refuses to listen, then he's not much of a friend is he? Leave him, then maybe someday he'll realize that he's all alone, and why? because of some video game.

or another option, join him and make the game for him a living hell. lol

thats why i am never going to try that game, i already waste my life sitting at home, i don't need more reasons to do so.

hack his account or delete it?

Congrats on the new title!

also TGS in your "my System" you say you have a "Evercool Silver Knight w/refrigerant" there is no refrigerant in there, its just water, or did you mod it?

He probably will loose his job. People get annoyed with folks who have a one track mind. They could just use the fact that he installed a game on his machine as an excuse to let him go.

That really sucks... as soon as I get another video card and can play something besides WoW, I'm done for a while. My dad plays all the time too, weekends, while working when he's on a conference call, etc. As fun as it is, it's not a very healthy game so it would seem... it's the kind of game where you can't play for only an hour and get somewhere. Blizzard says to take it in mediation but when they make it so the damn birds you're killing only "drop" the beaks you need at a 10% rate and you need 30 beaks, it's gonna take a while. I know I'm done... Crysis is much more fun anyway, lol.

I'd do what Zephik said, sit down and talk to him. SHOW him what you're seeing... and hopefully you can save him from totally destroying his real life and falling into a false reality... which sadly seems to be what WoW is for a lot of people.

Congrats on the moderator status.

I guess I considered their "8mm copper tube injected with anti-freeze" as refrigerant. Fixed

I've never been able to play any MMOs, and I couldn't be happier. They are stupid and time-consuming, not to mention they cost a monthly fee and take away any ounce of a life you had. Plus, WoW looks like crap anyway. It's got bad graphics and is just another fantasy MMO (IMO).

Maybe on your system. I think the graphics are actually quite nice. :)

I tried WoW and hated it. It was waaay too cartoony.

That's the point guys.. it's not supposed to look photorealistic.

after looking at mals specs.... I don't think it's cause of his system lol.

I know it's not supposed to look photo realistic, but neither is EQ2 yet it's graphics are faaaar better than WoW in my opinion. WoW was just lame to me... i quit before the 7 day trial was over.

Anyways, back to the point. Although I do admit MMORPGs are addictive as hell, that is pretty pathetic that he's letting it ruin/take over his life. I say give him a wakeup call that will snap him out of it. Possibly sabotage his WoW when you visit him? :D

If you're going to sabotage WoW, the best way to do it is disable his connection to the internet. Make sure his work closes the ports he needs to connect to WoW, etc.

I played the WoW trial and found myself addicted for 2 weeks. I had 2 characters as far as you can get them on trial before my 2 weeks were up (level 20 I think). After the 2 weeks were up I didn't see a point in playing on and couldn't see what some of my mates could see in it. One of my mates actually paid me for my trial account so he could activate it and sell the characters. The graphics do look cartoony but as Luke said that's how it is meant to look. It is just a ploy by Blizzard to make the game as easy to run for the computers meaning more people can play and waste their time. I could run it on my 6600GT and that thing couldn't even run BF2 without crashing.

I came, I saw and I was disappointed. back to BF2 on the net for me.

Well at least he isn't a young teenager playing Halo. My god, those little pricks drive me nuts. lol My cousin is one of them.

Oh, your first time playing halo 3? oh, you haven't even touched an xbox in how long?? okay, I'll go easy on you.

I believe the score was 22 to 3 in like 10 minutes. Thats like two freaking kills a minute, meaning I couldn't survive against him for longer than 30 seconds. lol lil punks...

Thats actually exacly how i felt. I was hooked for the 2 weeks, only problem(had to do with my network) was that every time i went into a party(the main reason i tried it, to be with my friend who plays) i would disconect. That and every time i would get into a raid after disconnecting many times, i needed to go somewhere.

@greco... not all people are like that. I love halo. When i play with friends who arent too good, i make sure i use all the bad weapons and not use vehicles so its fair for everyone.....Most of the time that is:D

I've played WoW off and on for almost 2 years. There was a time (before my son was born) that my wife and I would play together 2-3 nights a week, for a at least a couple hours a night.

It was certainly cheaper than going out to movies all the time, and for us, just as entertaining. Yes, we are both game geeks.. prior to WoW we both played Guild Wars, but were attracted to the greater depth of play of WoW. I love the lore and story line of WoW, and the environments are IMO some of the best in any game for exploration.

We quit playing because we simply didnt have time anymore, and couldnt justify paying for something that we might get an hour a month into.. at this point it IS cheaper for us to go to a couple movies a month.

I do miss playing WoW, and will probably get back into it eventually, but who knows, maybe some other game will come along, or maybe RL will finally win out. ;)

It's a shame that someone could get so attached to a game that he would throw away his entire life, maybe that's what he needs to realize.. he's traded away reality for a fantasy. Tell him he needs to go a meeting for addicts, and see how he takes it.

I think I"m actually addicted to the social part of the game... there are a couple people I like talking to on there and that's the best way to talk with them, so I find myself playing all day waiting about six hours for them to log on. I think it's back to playing Oblivion, Crysis, and CnC3, along with reading books after I get my video card replaced... and maybe finally set up my own TS server, lol... This damn game is sucking me in like a tornado and it's got a pretty good grip on me. To hell with that! lol

Wow can be addictive, but only to people who do not know how to control themselves to begin with. If they get sucked into WoW so quickly they probably are the type of people to get sucked into other things quickly as well. Just try talking to him I suppose.

As for WoW's graphics, its meant to be cartoony. Its the way the other Warcraft games were. I don't like MMO's where things look to "realistic". Its harder for me to get immersed because I point out all the flaws. WoW's graphics may not be the best (it is a 3 year old game as well, and MMO's are more taxing at high graphics than other games because of the sheer amount of people and data), but the art style is amazing in my opinion.

You have to look at the streaming load engine aswell. To have that mmany users on such an expansive land with very little load times your gonna have worse graphics then COD4 or UT3.

Ever since I broke my addiction to everquest I've never been able to fully get addicted to any MMO again.

I've already lost 2 of my friends and a brother to it. Me and my mom were sick as dogs a couple days back, and we needed him to pick up some food. Lets just say we didnt eat till 9pm because he had a "Raid".

He's said he's met chicks on the game who are "HOT". Is this like elvish love or something? Or maybe female gamer geeks on the internet?

xRyokenx
01-14-2008, 04:05 PM
They're probably dudes, lol. There are so many guys that play female characters it's almost sad...

But yeah, I met a cool chick on there too and have confirmed that A) she is a chick and B) she looks pretty nice... she's not a total jerk either. Lucky me. lol

I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I let my character die just to see the night elf resurrection goddess. :p

I've known a few girls who are models, of the suicide girl type, who play WoW. There is even a Suicide Girl who does play, her name is Posh. I've also known plenty of girls who are just your average every day beautiful. The first girl I met on WoW was very attractive, but she was sick or something so I guess she was the bed ridden type. Not a whole lot to do when its like that.

Most girls are, how do I say this nicely... horrifyingly hideous? lol no not really, but from my experience and knowledge, there are more girls who aren't attractive than girls who are, but the ones who are attractive are not all that rare surprisingly. Fairly common actually.

If WoW were to ever triple in size, it would be the end of RL as we know it. lol

I usually get more attracted to people if they're nice to me and I get along with them... I'm really getting past the bit of shallowness I had...

But yeah, video games are taking over my life and I hate it. Time for some massive lifestyle changes but that's gonna be tough to pull off...

I'm just the opposite oddly. The funny thing is, I don't look as good as I used to. Maybe I'm trying to compensate? lol

Then again, most of my friends ask me "what the hell am I thinking" whenever I get a gf. Apparently I have a very unique taste. < Girls with at least one full sleeve and at least one facial piercing

TGS, ask him if he ever hooks up with those "hot" chicks. Case and point.

This is kinda like on the comic Control-Alt-Delete. Ethan got addicted to Everquest 2. Intervention...then take the disc...then...(make sure he doesn't buy another one) and only let him play when you play...

simon275
01-16-2008, 06:19 PM
Yeah I was gonna suggest an intervention. I played wow in my second and final year of school I was addicted to it really badly. When it came to study at the end of my final year I uninstalled the game and put the discs in the back of the closet. There they lie today.

Just because they say they are a girl doesn't mean they really and truly are. Let me quote bash at this point.

Welcome to Evolnet! Where the men are men, the women are men, and the boys are fbi agents. but some of the men are really women. Enjoy!

I'm never going to start playing this game, the amount of stories i see about people being consumed by it. And South Park too, south park + WoW = hilarious.

My life is consumed enough by UT3, and trying to stay in top rankings, im trying to get back up there first. But i doubt its anywhere near as bad as WoW.

Quakken
01-24-2008, 07:50 PM
Wow is a grind. Sure, you have some quests to loosen it up a little bit, but even those quests are are grinds for a specific (and sometimes nonsensical drop) off of a mob.

Once you get to the maximum level, it is either a rep grind, a 40 person raid grind, or a repetitive PvP grind in the same arenas or battlegrounds. Once you get all the gear you want for your character, you either realize that it is a WASTE OF YOUR TIME or you decide to start a new character, and do this all over again.

You can't win. All the time you spend on your character will be lost. It's worthless. You can't go to a job interview and say "yeah, I have 5 70's and a 65 mage" and expect them to hire you. Time spent in that venture doesn't carry over to the real world.

I'm not saying it isn't enjoyable. But it's designed to take your time, and with your time your money. This game is not something you should be using your life for. Go outside. Meet people. Try paintball.

Real life's gameplay is awesome, and the graphics are incredible.

Tell that to your friend.

Yeah, she's getting pretty frustrated with is and I'ma see if I can't get her to quit too... I really would rather play something like Oblivion or Crysis because I can get somewhere in an hour and don't have to get to a town for my "rested xp" or anything, lol.

I was tempted to go for a hike earlier but she lives in PA and I'm in NC so it's hard to do things, lol... trying to get out of this house though, it's getting too frustrating for any sane person to live here and stay sane... we'll see what happens and hopefully something good does happen.

By the way, I don't even have the expansion nor do I plan on buying it.
