I have a logitech sub and am considering spicing it up a bit....

This is the sub:
http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/im.php/width/640/im/1677_7_logitech_x-230.jpg

i have some 5mm thick perspex so was thinking about adding a top window and side window with 4" blue cold cathodes inside. (sound activated of course)

the problem with the side window is that on 1 side, is the circuit board (where i want the window) and the other side is the speaker.... i know i could remove the speaker, cut a square/larger circle in the side, mount the perspex in the hole then mount the speaker in the perspex.... but then there is the problem of fixing everything together

the other side would be less of a problem (providing there is a small gap to allow light through) because i will just give the perspex a "frosted effect"

any ideas what i could do with it?

please note i have a fairly limited budget...

You could always change the colour of the sub. It does look kinda boring being all black maybe add a bit of silver too the front and change the colour of the mesh. You idea sounds awesome as well I look forward to seeing you do it.

I was thinking of a paint job but paint isnt really my thing!! I dont have the ideas and it never turns out how i would like it! If i had some kind of idea of WHAT to change the paint job to, i could create a stencil for it.... i will draw something up now, see if i can get anything i like

Thanks for your idea :)

Honestly, I think you'd get tired of it fast.

I've never been very fond of the impulsing cathodes because they just remind me of a loose connection or something haha.

I would replace that whole side with the speaker on it with a plexi panel and cut a hole in the plexi to mount the sub. A simple solution.

I was thinking about replacing the whole side with plexi, but by doing that (or my other idea of having a plexi "ring" around the sub. see fig. 1) would i not lose sound quality with it being plexi and not MDF?

I actually like pulsing CCFL's, I have some in my custom cd player casing ("frosted" perspex) and also some around my monitor (although these are not perminant)

i was thinking perhaps a whole new MDF case how I want it, I would make it aproximatly the same size out of mainly MDF because i know if you do not use the right material/have the correct volume, the quality can be reduced and the bass sounds distorted.

anyway.....

fig.1 (where the wood is showing, i was going to cut that out and replace it with a large square piece of plexi so only the ring is showing plexi... if that makes sense??):

Coincidence??

The circle cut-out in my PC is the PERFECT size for this sub!! it would give awful sound quality though (there is usually a window in the case but i removed it to take this picture, the window is frosted perspex and hides the messy cables)

Be careful doing that.. subwoofers have magnets.. which eat data.

yeh i was supposed to mention that but dforgot, the magnet is quite strong aswell.... i only tried that because my 2 HD's were in another pc at the time and thats the only thing im too bothered about!
