If you look at windows media player, doesnt it look like aero? Do you think thats how they got the graphical ideas for the Aero skin in Vista?

they probably just wanted a aesthetically pleasing design and put one person/group of peoples on the job of designing aero and the applications for it. WMP11 happens to be one of those (you'll note that 10 and below don't look like 11 does).

It's not really stealing from itself. You can't technically steal from yourself anyways. Otherwise I'd always be pissed for nicking my own money. =p
