I saw it linked on www.makezine.com and www.instructables.com
I made one but have yet to try it out. I gotta go buy some lighter fluid.
Hopefully it works and doesn't burn too much.

I guarantee that is a fake. You would still have the heat even if it is not actually using you as a fuel source.

Hmmm.... I don't think it's fake. I still think caution should be used anyway.

if i can find some cotton i believe i still have a bottle of the same lighter fluid back from high school. though i will place it on the ground/paper and if that burns it will burn me all the same.

well surprise, surprise... it will burn you!
i made the ball (100% cotton pants + 100% cotton thread) mixed with some ronson fuel and a dash of holding for more than 5 seconds = burnt hands, fingers, house!
i never burnt myself but i had my finger about half a cm away from the bottom/side of the fire and it warmed up fast.

you can see black smoke from mine and not his, which makes sense since its doesn't get enough o2 for complete combustion. you can also see an interesting burn pattern on the paper. it makes me think the bottom would be fine but the fire on the sides being so close would still burn you. maybe with vasoline it might be fine.

Especially the part where he held it in the video, I knew that any fire did not work like that without burning.
no.

Isnt vasoline made out of petrolium jelly? Your hand would light up in seconds

yes, but its petroleum based, not made out of it completely. i just tested it now and the vasoline melts but doesn't catch fire. then i put my bare finger over fire, about an inch above a jet flame and it started hurting maybe 2-3 seconds. then i put some on my finger and it was fine for maybe 6 seconds before it started warming up.
so if that was real there was Definitely some kind of protection going on.

if i had some spare cash lying around, i would probably go to walmart right now. i wanna try it, but i had an acquaintance, who just plainly put lighter fluid on his hand and lit it (idiot), the whole taking him to hospital party is still in my head. but i might try this probably within the week. lol
