I was talking to my friend about my mini-itx board and the custom enlocure im thinking for it, and he said if I opened the PSU it would present interference issues with the other electronic components. I would leave it in the steel case, but the damn cables come out the wrong side so I cant mount it like I had wished and it would make the case a lot bigger (obviously not a plus for a system that should be as small as possible

You could just drill another hole in the case and put the wires through your new hole. But, I would probalby also see if he's right about those interference issues by trying it out. You might not have any trouble with interference at all.

Food for thought: If you take apart an Xbox, you'll notice the PSU isn't enclosed in anything. It's just a bunch of PSU parts in the corner of the box.

There are PSU mods, basicly a lexan cover for it. I've seen it many times over. If there was a serious problem, im sure somone would have mentioned it.
The only real problem i can see would be with sound. The interference might make its way into the DAC's and cause some distortion. However, since most onboard DAC's are at the bottom of the mobo, its essentialy as far away as possible allready. If you intend to use a sound card, you might want to keep it in the furthest slot from the psu.
I cant say for sure, though it sounds like a worth while expariment to find out.
