View Full Version : I'm at school
Wewt, first day of college. I've got an hour to kill until my next class. I'm in the cafeteria right now, and just connected to the school's network. It's been going good so far. My first class today was Intro to Engineering. At 4 I have Digital Photography. I ****ed up when driving here though. I ended up getting lost in Providence... Theres a part of the highway where it forks off to the right, and I didn't notice it and stayed on the left. So instead of going to West Warwick, I ended up somewhere in Providence >_>. My GPS got me out though ^_^
This engineering class, it's like, just perfect for me. It's everything I want to be and do. I think it's probably a class that would fit everyone here. Our first project will be to build a wind turbine. Seems interesting.

Glad you're liking college, dude. I'm actually taking a semester off to work right now. I presume you're going to a real college, not community "college," right?
No, I'm going to the Community College of Rhode Island. I'm here for an engineering associates degree, and as a way to start me off to prepare me for a 4 year university. I plan on going here 2 years and then transferring. I eventually want to go to MIT for computer engineering.

I'm at work.
:) I'm gonna go get lunch now.. glad to hear that you are enjoying your first day!
Oh, I also have some good news. They have a bunch of workshops and machine shops and stuff here too. So I could use their equipment for case building! Anyways, off to class now. 7 minutes until my photography class.

I had some tuna for lunch. ;)
That was my plan from the start too... I think I just got crap teachers last semester, lol.
Glad you're enjoying college though.
I think I might actually drop my photography class. First off, all of the computers used for that class are Macs, which I just don't want to touch. I hated using it today. I also feel it's too slowed paced for me and below my level right now. I might as well just continue photography on my own.

Done that before, but opposite. Wanted to go west to CT but ended up on the outside of Providence. Congrats on college though.
Oh, speaking of getting lost in Providence, I ****ed up more on the way home. I was lost in the suburbs of Providence for half an hour tonight. My GPS kept ****ing up. It kept saying "calculating route" and then going blank and then saying "calculating route" and then shutting off, and then doing the same thing again when turned back on. And then the way it eventually wanted me to go had the bridge closed, so I had to ask an officer for directions. At least I made it back home!

Congrats on going to college! Thats great for you. Community college is a good starting point. Good luck getting in MIT although RIT is better ;). I had a class called Intro to Engineering but it was totally different. It was for people like me who went in to the school Engineering Undeclared so we learned about each of the different Engineering majors.
First off, all of the computers used for that class are Macs, which I just don't want to touch.Would you seriously drop a class because of Macs. Weak dude, just weak. Don't not do something you want just because of something stupid like that. Why the hell are they so bad, yeah they are a little simpler to use at the basic level although I personally think they are more intuitive, plus if you use them enough you can discover some trick things to do with them, I use photoshop on both OSX and Windows, just not the same on Windows it flows much more smoothly on OSX.

You think it's bad that just the class uses Mac's?
Pfft, my friends school MADE them BUY MACBOOKS for the class. If they didn't buy it they were facing being dropped out of the college. (It's an accelerated college)
But don't drop out of the class.
Even if there is only a one button mouse. :tinfoil:

I think he means he wants to drop the course because the photography aspect is too slow for him.. he's getting into some decently advanced stuff on his own, and the program might actually be behind him atm. :)

Hey! Ceramics kicks ass! I've actually got a class tonight I think... I need to find out, lol. When I get my own place I plan on making all my own dishes, if possible. /threadjack

I'm currently a Sophomore in high school right now, but hopefully next year they'll let me take a class at our tech instead of at school. I don't know though, I've only seen Seniors do it... I'd really like to take a class on C++, C#, or PHP, and the only programming class left at our high school is Pascal... :dead:

A suggestion, only because I did it myself, is to stick with your classes, even if they are behind you. Most any of the first classes any of us take will be "behind" us. But if you want to progress in that direction you have to take those beginning courses to get to the ones that you like and are more fun.
It sucks and is boring, but they do open up more options for you later. I wish I hadn't dropped classes that were too far behind me, as now I have to take them anyway to get to the classes I want.

So far I've taken classes on HTML and Visual Basic 2005 (VB 1 and VB 2, different semesters, different material). I would take the Pascal class, but who even uses Pascal anymore? The only upside to that class is the small ending unit on Java, but I don't care about that, I already know Java. The only redeeming part of the Pascal class is the similarities it has to Java and C (structure and syntax wise).
We'll see though. I may not even be able to, since I'll only be a Junior.
Edit: BTW, I don't know much about Pascal other than it's old, so please, feel free to correct me on any of that.
I might not drop it. And if I did, it wouldn't be because of the Macs. In other news today, my laptop arrived for me earlier, just as I was about to leave. I set it up during English class today, and ended up doing a live video broadcast with like 50 people watching. I ended up walking around the school with it, and even went into the elevator and told everyone thery were on Internet. There's this club for engineering students; the Engineering Student Association. I figure since I am one, I might as well join it to help meet some new people. Oh, and the laptop pwns.

Nice. Good luck in college man. Its not all fun. Mostly. But not all.
Specs on the laptop?
Edit: One more thing. Sometimes even with these basic classes that seem so 'behind' you sometimes they can teach you one thing that changes everything. Maybe just change the way you see something or give you one skill that you didnt have before and it makes it worth it.

High school, finals week
nothing like finishing an hour early and killing time by killing people in some Deathmatch Classic. Gonna play Ut99 pretty soon here.

I took a few classes like that. I never had to study, just read the chapters assigned and got an A+. It was an easy couple of credits and gave me a chance to boost my GPA and catch up on the harder classes.

Since real men never ask directions, should real men admit to using a GPS? (hehe) (JK!)

Yes Pascal is old. I also took a Pascal class about 15 years ago, and the first thing the instructor said to us was; "Pascal is not used to program anything, it is only used to teach programming languages." I had to disagree with him, since the company I was working for at the time, used Pascal for it's flagship product; On Demand Courier software (all aspects of the business including tracking, payroll, billing, etc). I was hired to maintain a SCO Xenix system used ONLY for compiling Pascal code. I had to bring him proof before he would believe me. It does help if you have never had a programming class. Since you have had some programming, try to get into the C++ class instead (usually takes the instructors approval).
Alright, so I'm home for the day. I did drop the photography class. But I'm not just going to leave that. I need a 4th class to be a full time student. So instead what I'm going to do is add a physics class. I just realized that I don't have any science class at all. But for what I want to do, I need this. I need like, 2 years of physics to help me get into MIT.
