Thread reopened. Thanks to .Malficus, I learned that sony actually ENDORSES installing linux on the PS3. They just scored some major points with me. Discuss away guys!

I get a regular Apache directory that says, "Index of /support/install/ps3" with the file you need. Do you need help downloading it?

In Firefox, Right-click the link and do "Save Link As".

Now, I can't figure out my wired connection. It was supposed to find it automatically...but it didn't. I don't know which hardware to choose or how to set it up.

Did you actually get a distro installed? Which one?

This is pretty cool. I had a question:

If you were to connect your PS3 to a computer monitor would get a higher resolution than the one in the video?

.Maleficus.

Probably. Or, an HDTV would do the same.

Like SgtM said, Sony scored some major points with me for allowing, and encouraging this. It's like a waay better version of XNA when you think about it (XNA being M$'s game development toolkit for Windows and 360). XNA requires you to have Visual C# Express or Studio installed, on an XP or Vista machine, but by allowing users to install Linux on a PS3, devs can develop and run games straight from one machine. Game development is the real reason they're doing this too (look at the epic fail that the PS2 Linux Dev Kit had, and look at the success of PS3 Linux) so Sony really has something great here. It's promoting creativity, game development, OSS, and it's making them money. Whoever thought of this should be given a medal.

the reason there was a crappy resolution in the vid was because sony have locked all the graphics hardware away from any 3rd party OS just so you dont start gaming on it.

I think this is really cool, but if i couldn't push at least 1024 x 768 I wouldn't bother. But if it's like Mal. said and it would work w/ my monitors resolution then i would love to do this. I guess it really doesn't matter since i'll probably never have a PS3 lol. Anyway awesome idea, I really wish they would let us use the graphics though. I really doubt home brew gaming would cut in to their sales all that much.

I'm curious if we'll see any more games for linux because of this.

Probably not for Linux, but for PS3. The point of the PS2 Linux Dev Kit was for creating PS2 games (using Linux), so if we see any it'll be for PS3.

I installed YDL, and on my hdtv...awesome.

.Maleficus.
01-27-2008, 08:56 AM
So you can get internet to work on YDL? I've never used YDL before, so I'll have to look into this... Are you trying to use the PS3's WiFi?

Edit: Here you go (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/solutions/ydl_5.0/ps3-wifi-install.shtml).

No, I want to use a wired connection.
In that case, I don't know, I've never used Yellow Dog. There should be a Networking thing in the System menu though.

Yeah, I just don't know what hardware to choose, and its a big list.

.Maleficus.

There should only be like, two... 1 for the wired connection and 1 for the WiFi... Oh well, just choose eth0. That SHOULD be the wired connection (wlan0 would be WiFi I'm guessing).

I'll try that.
