This is a strange one.

My computer has three hard disks:
40GB IDE primary master (split 20/20 WinXP/linux)
80GB IDE Primary slave (FAT32, d: in WinXP)
80GB SATA

The 80GB slave keeps disappearing from the device manager in XP, but shows up again if I scan for new devices. It shows up in safe mode, and in linux.

This has only started happening recently.

Any ideas?

Check the SMART of the drive if possible.

ya sounds to me like the drive could be trying to bail out on you or isnt getting enough constant power. is your power supply old? is it tough enough? reseat your ide cables and if its still doing it concider moving important data off that disk incase it suddenly craps out.

I'm having a similar problem, my 80GB IDE disapears occasionally-- But only when I loose connection to the internet.

That's...odd.

Is it a hdd shared from another computer on your network? Although that wouldn't show up under my computer. Hmm...

Nope, it's physically installed in my box.

Set the jumper to master on secondary IDE.

Set the jumper to master on secondary IDE.
Huh? How's that going to work? My secondary IDE channel is taken up with my optical drives...

Check the SMART of the drive if possible.
SMART is enabled in the BIOS, but nothing out of the ordinary shows up during boot...

I sometimes have the same problem, but it's a SATA DVD Burner that disappears.

I don't know, hence the question.

Gragaphahgaragalbapagahahga. Every time I go to model my modeling harddrive has disconnected itself randomly.

I just ran that HD Tune program on my brand new SATA harddrive, and have a bit diffrent. Did you run an Error Scan?

Hmm, we both have the same highlighted line, but my read error count is rather worrying. I did run a full scan, which passed 100%.

I have a spare (unused) cable, I think I'll try that first.
