This is waaaay cool....

http://piclens.com/site/firefox/win/

I won't try to explain it, other than to say it's a new way to view pictures on web pages (such as google images, flickr, myspace etc. etc.). Just watch the demo (http://piclens.com/site/firefox/tutorial_pl_ff_16.php).

It's not as good as it looks though. It seems that the pictures are displayed in fewer (Probably 256) colours. I guess it would be too slow otherwise.

it's even a bit laggy with that res. I haven't screwed around with trying to adjust the settings though, maybe it can be tweaked. What I want it most for is google images. When I need an image I hate having to click through pages and pages of thumbs, much nicer to drag the wall. However, the thumbs don't seem to link to the pages. Did anyone else notice this or did I just overlook something?

Its really cool but it makes me sick :( *barfs*

Sirusly tho, if you get motion sickness, dont use this, after using this for 3 seconds i was about to throw up.

There is a little blue bar that shows the progress as its loading .. when it completes the picture looks fine to me. I did notice that if its a smaller pic and you zoom in on it, it becomes a little blurry but thats to be expected. Still its really a fun tool.

look at a pic with larger fading colours, like skin tones or sky.

Looks interesting, but I don't think my laptop would handle it very well xD

With the pics, yes they lose quality, but only when on th wall
Once you click on the image it should go back to it's original quality

I'm running this VERY WELL with my Inspiron 8600 laptop. As mentioned above, quality is reduced on the wall view, but it resamples the image to proper quality when clicked on.

Now I need to figure out if I can run this for pictures saved locally.

actually, on mine the res is amazingly good when I select a pic. Does anyone know if you can set it to link to the pages after you choose a picture?

xmastree
02-01-2008, 03:22 AM
actually, on mine the res is amazingly good when I select a pic. The resolution is fine, it's the colour depth that is reduced. Look at the girl's face in my last post (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showpost.php?p=170716&postcount=10)

I saw that, wasn't sure what the deal was though. I could really care less about high quality, I use the image search just to locate something. But when I find it I usually want to hit the site and download the pic to my desktop. I can't seem to do either with the wall

xmastree
02-01-2008, 03:28 AM
Nope, I don't think there's a way to do that. All you can do is use the wall to make a guess as to which page it's on and go back to google.

jdbnsn
02-01-2008, 03:49 AM
that's too bad, because otherwise it's awesome

OvRiDe
02-02-2008, 02:35 AM
Once you select the picture .. if you look in the upper left hand corner there is a symbol that has the ">" with a circle around it.. if you click that while you have a picture selected it will take you to the original page.

I just noticed that earlier today and forgot to post it. Now this thing is my savior.

I have no troubles with it dithering the colors on mine.

What I DID have trouble with was installing it on the new box.. Vista X64 + Firefox + SLI = FAIL. Replace Firefox with IE, and it works.. but you dont get the wall view on IE.. which sucks.
I emailed support.. hopefully I get a response soon.

jdbnsn

actually I think you can use the wall on other browsers

OvRiDe
02-02-2008, 06:09 AM
I have been scrutinizing the dithering as well.. and I have got to say.. I don't see the same issue as Xmas posted. Are you using Windoze or Linux? Thats the only thing I can figure?
Anyhoo.. VERY cool tool, thanks again for sharing!

Got it! I had my desktop set to 16 bit colour. Changed it to 32 and it's nice now.

Brilliant. If this was a standalone thing for viewing local pictures, it would seriously dominate.

I second that.. using this for local images would be inredible. I'd pay for that actually.

I showed my mom this, and she said "Are these people making a profit off this?"

I told her no, and she said she'd gladly pay for it. She had me install Firefox for her just to use it (she has MSN). She then spent the next hour or so looking at images on it.

You guys sure about that? I'd swear I saw a page talking about using it in other browsers.

Other browsers yes, but only Mac and Windows.

Which is really too bad, it'd be great to have on Linux also.

There's probably some way to get it to work on Linux... and tweaks and all will be popping up all over the web soon enough. :)

I wonder if it would be possible to enable this for work log posts...There's the ticket!

I'm looking into this (http://piclens.com/lite/publisher-win.php) right now!

I was thinking the exact same thing, and guess what ... YOU CAN!!

I was just messing around, so I opened up FF and put c:\ in the address bar. So it brings up my file structure, and then I navigated to My Pictures folder and then clicked on the PicLens button in the top right hand corner of the browser. To my surprise it brought up ALL the pictures in that specific folder!!!

SWEET!!!

Unfortunately you still can't navigate to different folders from within PicLens, but its a hell of a start!

If your using a Firefox version you can also drag a folder of your pics to the browser window and hit the piclens button to open it.
You can also add piclens to your own site, (http://piclens.com/lite/) this site would be great as well!

Thanks xmastree for posting this in a room where people would see it, I'm still finding my way around the forum and posting it in the review section probably wasn't the best idea I've had!
