I have had an idea for a case floating around in my head for awhile, and I think I have finally got a decent enough design sketch to present to you all. I posted this in the Idea zone because I am just looking to get some opinions before I start construction. It will most likely be another four months before I start construction.

So here it is.

This is a sketch of the basic frame that I will have. Everything in red will be some sort of aluminum. The main uprights will be 1 inch aluminum angle iron, and most of the rest will be 1in flat stock. Right now I plan on mounting the flat stock cross members to the uprights using pop-rivets, then from those cross members I will have to bend some brackets of my own to go from the angle of elevation to flat so I can mount my components.

This picture shows the different sections of skin I will have. I will most likely solid mount the skin on the front, to reduce visible seems. But the sides and back will be removable to allow access to the internals. Everything that is black in the picture I might solid mount as well. This is because this top part of the case will not be used to house the actual system itself. It will just be used as a chimney, and as storage. I plan on trying to make a swinging door on the back for this area. Also I plan on making this top storage area removable for when I have to move my case.

This last picture is hopefully what I can get it too look like when I'm done. Except that I am going to try my hand at stealthing the DVD drive so it won't be visible. Also the top pyramid will be skinned in metal mesh, to allow the hot air to escape and maybe a nice red glow too. :)

That is about it. I do have some question to ask though. I am still uncertain on how exactly to mount the skin or even what to use to skin it. I am thinking of using sheet metal, but I have heard about polystyrene. Would that work or no? Also to mount it, I am hoping I can just find some flathead screws, and just screw it into my uprights.

I will not be sure on the over all dimensions until it is done. This is because I will mess with the angle of elevation when I am working on it to what looks the best. This angle affects how tall it will be. However it will be roughly 15 inches square at the base, and around 5 feet tall.

Well I think that is it for now. I'm sure that I might have missed a few things. But please tell me what you think of my design and let me know any suggestions or questions that you may have. Thank you and enjoy.

Looks interesting, is it based on the Washington Monument?

I can't really remember how I decided on this design. It just always stuck in my head. I think I had Obelisks in general on my mind, not the Washington monument. But I do reference the Washington Monument when people ask me to describe it.

Thx. I knew it was going to big from the start. This case isn't quite meant for travel. I am hoping that I can start construction within a few weeks. I just need to find a place for a band saw in my apartment. The kitchen is looking like a good place for it :D

One suggestion: a slowly flashing red light at the top--make it look like a beacon to let planes know that they are flying too low!

Ha! Thats awesome. I was planning on having a steady red glow up there from a fan or something. So I might just have to find a way to switch it so it blinks.

why not use a slot load optical drive?

I hadn't thought about that. That would probably work better in this application. I was just going off the fact that I have a tray load. However, I just did a quick search for slot load optical drives and I didn't find any. I will have to do a better search when I have time. Thanks for bringing that up, it could save me some trouble.
