I was wondering, since there is a UV/Sun light warning with the HD.
How sensitive is it? will it brake down when you put it inside a case with a UV-cathode?

And if it'is indeed sensitive to the UV light. How can I shield it from it while still be able to seen into the drive?

EDIT: For those who wonder what HD this is. Here it is. (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=190)

There are plenty of plastics and such that are transparent in the visible range, but not as transparent in the UV range. I your typical glass is UV opaque (though sure where the cut off is or how that would effect the disk).

I did some google'ing' after meticoeus pointed somethings out . and this is what I found out.

SOME WAYS TO REDUCE UV HAZARDS
UVB and UVC, as well as the shortest UVA wavelengths, do not go through ordinary glass. Even Pyrex and other more ordinary forms of heat-resistant glass can be used as shields to block UVB and UVC.

They also state that ordinary glass filters out almost 95% of the UV light .

Would it help if you put two layers on top of each other. Would it filter out more?

If I would shield it with a single layer of glass, would the leftover 5% harm the Hdrive

as you said that glass filter most of the uv away, what is true.. also i dont think a huge company would sell a product what could go wrong without vigorous testing.. because it would be money out of there pockets..

I will mount it under a Glass panel. if it breaks due to UV ill let you guys know. for now I see it as my own experiment with a expensive drive. Maybe ill try it with out the glass panel. Ill figure out what to do.

I was planning to put it in a water cooled pc (only cpu and gpu). The drive itself will sit in a special display at the bottom of the case (air flowing in from below the drive). So I can go for both options glass ontop or maybe not.

lol.. well if i had the money to buy one of those expensive f.... well you know what i mean, i would display it as much as i could... cut a big hole in the front and mount it upwards and scream to every one who sees it.. "hay can you see my porn collection on that hard drive.."

btw i dont have a pron collection but wow those drives are expensive i think it was like 2 pound a gig  faint

The UV warning Western Digital gives is for the plastic window that is on the drive. Plastics degrade more rapidly than usual when exposed to Ultra Violet light waves. You can see this as 'sun bleaching' of white plastic to more of a yellowish color. The acrylic window will in itself filter any UV light from getting to the platters themselves. If you have a clear acrylic side panel, it should show signs of yellowing way before the drives window will. I wouldn't place the UV cathode over the drive itself, just as a precaution.

Thanks that was the info I needed.
