Just wondering if anyone was getting something crazy for their PC with their return. Hopefully I will get mine this year cuz there is that extra $600 - $1200 that everyone will be getting. I'll probably finish buying the tools and supplies I need for my case and possibly a tv.

How about you guys?

I was thinking about taking the money and going to Vegas. I've never been there and I feel like I need to get away for a few days. What better to eat some of the worlds best foods and see the best shows. Maybe even gamble a bit. But we'll see how that goes.

I supposedly get one but my parents are keeping it out of my reach, mental and physical. Nobody tells me anything around here (my "home," that is).

I already dropped like 1400 bucks on the new machine. the rest of it we spent on our 2 girls and the house and got the wife a laptop. with the rest of it we are going to go on vaction and may be moving to where we take vacation(Rockford,Illinois). I might be investing in a wc kit or something.

It is nice to get my money for once... people usually don't give me anything of mine that they've taken... ohh... we lost it. *idiot then shrugs* ...or something similar happens.

If you are old enough to file a tax return, it is a federal crime for anyone to intercept it or keep it from you. A polite reminder would suffice...

...and the government has been using it interest free since you overpaid...

I will be using any money I get back for a trip... Maybe a second video card to sli.

Isn't it the same for mail? I'll go ahead and remind them later on this evening or I'm notifying the proper authorities.

Tampering with someone else's mail IS a federal crime. However, if it is their house, it is their mailbox. They are not allowed to open your mail or prevent it from getting it to you.

Man I sound like the mail nazi. Seriously though, I have been down this road with a neighbor and I can tell you that the Postmaster General takes his/her job seriously. The postal inspectors take all complaints to heart, even those involving family members. (ask my dad)

You must remember that you are living in their house though and approach the situation accordingly.

BTW: I love this poster:

Yeah, I had a thing from Target saying "thanks for applying and all that but we've chosen someone else" or something like that... and dad opened it and told my bro to throw it out... or god knows what. And they've hidden my debit card from me. Yes, I know this is their house, and I do need somewhere to stay but I'm trying to get out of here as soon as I can. If you want to know more then PM me and I'll link you to my MySpace, I don't feel like hijacking this thread too badly and I'm going to respect the forums by not delving too deeply into my personal life here. :)

Believe it or not I'm getting $80 back on my first tax return ever. I worked at the local grocery story for about 4 months then realized that I could do better than that. I left and made my own local PC business with my friend. It's not quite official yet, but we have been getting a lot of cash. I've built 8 custom computers in two months for a total $705 in profits. And thats all from word of mouth.

I've already got that $80 put towards my next graphics card.

That's awesome dude! Profiting in only a couple of months. Keep at it. You know what they say.. well, my multi billion dollar company started out as just messing around in the garage.. the rest is history.

Isn't that how HP started? In one guys garage?
Anyway probably new cell phones, we've had the same ones for 2 years and my Razor isn't holding a charge very long anymore. Hers sometimes will give her a static shock but I think that is just her moving around the house. The rest will probably see the savings account. My "new" computer will have to last me a while.

i grossed almost $11,000 so my return is in the neighborhood of $850, not including the $600 check (if they approve it).

It's gonna be saved up and put towards a viper alarm system for the stang.

From what I understand about the extra return is that if it is approved, it won't be until Julyish. Which means you won't get the money till August - September :(. And the way they are explaining it now is that if you have kids its like $300 each with a max of $1200. If your a couple you get $600 each. And if your single you get $300. And for how much you make it will probably be between $3,000 and 75,000. its based on household now instead of the individual.

Nope, it is absolutely legal to claim up to x dependents, based on various criteria....
Example, claim 1 if for yourself, claim 1 if noone else can claim you, etc, whatever, you claim 0 througout the year so they take the maximum in taxes, then at the end of the year you claim yourself as much as you legally can, and reap a huge reward. It's perfectly legal.

Yeah at work they take the taxes from my paycheck as if I was single also.

The year we got married, my wifes company got bought out within a few months of her starting there. She got stock options when she started. We made alot more on the options than what she made as her salary for the very short time she worked for them. We paid a lot at tax time that year because of capital gains.

After our first born came, we couldn't believe how much we got back. It was $4,000. When the second was born our return went up to $6800. Last year we screwed up our tax return options when we sold rrsps to buy our house. I had already bought our first house using RRSPs so this time, it was claimed as income. Our return went down to $4500.

This year, wife and 2 kids dependants, investments in RRSPs , donations to registered charities, etc. should be a return of roughly $8500

Congress approved the Rebate!!

Everyone will get a check! Even the unemployed will get $300. I'm gonna get about $1000 on top of the $3600 I'm already getting!!!

We're getting $1500 back from the fed's (thank you very much Hope Education Credit!), and have to pay $150 or so into state.

And if I've read the rebate check right, that's another $1200 (I think).

I've got a baby stroller (CCFL's for sure, battery pack, etc etc etc) to mod...and my wife think's I'm joking! :devcool:

Large returns can be nice but it's just borrowed money that Uncle Sam is giving back to you, interest free. An option is to claim 1 or 2 more on your W-4 form from your employer so that less money is withheld from your paychecks every week (which is essentially the money being paid back to you at the end of the year as a return) and investing that extra income into a savings account or even a mutual fund which will collect interest. I think ideally, as nice as a large tax return may seem, it's best have the lowest possible return while still being more than what you owe for annual taxes.

While thats nice in theory, I could count on one hand the amount of people I know that will proactively take care of the extra money. It may be interest free, but its also money that we cant spend on daily crap. Its like a slush fund for our expensive toys. Yeah it may have been mine to begin with, but the extra bucks a week I would have blown in some way Im sure. This way I can do something better with it.

Good point, BigJohnson. I do admit I'm looking forward to getting mine back into my possession and definitely have some bills that will benefit nicely from my return.
