So, are you trying to play a downloaded video, or want to play a streaming video in a browser window?

Do you have totem installed? I don't really like it for a standalone player but I do like the mozilla plugin.

In Synaptic install these:
totem, totem-gstreamer, totem-mozilla, gstreamer-plugins-base, gstreamer-plugins-good, gstreamer-plugins-bad, gstreamer-plugins-ugly

if you also install flash, you should be able to stream movies from any site.

Use the search button in Synaptic and search for totem and look for a mozilla plugin. Depending on your source repository it may have a different name "totem-mozilla" is what it is called on mine.

What are the version #'s of totem and totem-gstreamer that you installed? It sounds like the firefox plugin is for a different version. Are there newer versions available? Which Ubuntu are you using?

Sorry it got complicated. It looks like you were close to having it working. It should just be a matter of making sure you are using compatible versions. If the versions you found were the only ones available, if you went with a newer version of Ubuntu, the compatibility issue should be resolved, because newer versions of each package would be available.
