In Popsci: a Crude but effective method apparently.
Santa Rosa, CA
Has 22 powerplants powered by geysers that spin 31 steam turbines.
Creates 850 magawatts of power.
This may be a technology we end up using on another planet.

New York, is considering using underwater turbines to generate electricity.
Funny that you brought this up. I was just learning about some of this stuff last week. I guess the currents in NY tore up the first set of props that they used. I'm convinced though, that nuclear is the way to go. Fascinating stuff there.

all the power we need is in the ocean, use those long floating tubes that get power from waves. or setup windmills in the ocean.

A couple of places are testing this now. In the Santa Cruz area They are building a desalinization plant that generate electricity too. They also discussed this with the Desal plant they are building near SF. Not sure if it will generate enough to do more than power the desal operations...

Someone's been reading either Popular Mechanics or Popular Science. Great article in one of those mags about the 50 greenest cities in the US.
Which reminds me, I need to look into that fuelmeister machine.
+Rep for reminding me!
