View Full Version : Project: PYS - Protect Your System

Hi there.
My name is Christopher aka Arkon. I'm 23 years old an I com from Germany. So be gentle with my english ;)
I'm member of the same German modding-forum as Froop. He told me about this one.
The theme of my mod will be security. While I was an active player I went on many LAN-Partys. After a LAN i heard many times about stolen hardware like keyboard, mouse, complete towers.
My case will be equiped with a 110db alarmsystem, an access cover for the connection of keyboard and so one and a special start-key wich will be used to boot the system and block keyboard and mouse while I'm not at the place.
These are the main projects. Additional the Case will be coverd by plates (PE core with 0,3mm Aluminium on both sides) whicht will look like an armor.
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/2193/pysxe6.jpg
Here are some concept-drawings for the first impressions:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/Concept4.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/Concept3.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/Concept5.jpg
Some statements:
The blue corners will be made of luminated plexi. This plexi will will be between the "armor-plates" too.
The lower left plate will removable. Behind this one will be an window. Possibly it will move automaticly aside. But thats not very easy ;)
The Front is Splitet in two plates. The upper one will move automaticly up and down. This is much easier because the original Case is a SilentMax. Those who know the case will know about the original front. Its also splittet in two parts. The moveable one has a gear rack at its back. A gear wheel breaks the front. This wheel will be attached on a motor.
Now som real pics do show you that I don't only plan the mod.
The radiator for the watercooling-system will be placed besides the mainboard:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/radi2.jpg
With cover:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/radiblende1.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/radiblende2.jpg
Here are som of the plates I will use for the "armor":
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/zuschnitte1.jpg
Then I build some locking mechanism wich will adjust the cover at the back:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/verriegelung1.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/verriegelung2.jpg
They will be detached by a rc-servo.
And then I bolted the firs plates on the case:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/seitenwand1.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/verschraubung1.jpg
At the moment I build many many little angles of aluminium to screw them on the "angle-plates". Without these little angles the large angels won't hold the 90°-angle.
Okay. Thats it. I hope I will be as busy as i conduct :D

Okay.
The first half oft the day i have used to prepare a boat for our lifguard-group. In the second half of the day i did a boring job. Manufacturing many of the little aluminium-angles. Drilling, taping and cutting many many times. This is the result:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/aluwinkel.jpg
I hope that are enough. They will be used to hold the larger angles which cover the corners in position. I told you.
Additionaly I added the motor/gear-box to the front:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/getriebe.jpg
To find the right transmission was not very easy. After 10 different versions of putting the gearing wheels together I made a transmission of ca 1:850. The front part moves up or down in 10 seconds. Thats fast enough. Perhaps i won't use the complete movement and stop after a few cm.
That's it for today. In the evening i will plan the positions for the screws. With all the plates it's not even easy. But one, two or three bottles of beer will help me to keep a clear mind ;)

I forgot the picture of the Gear-Box :D
Okay. Yesterday I found a solution for the Window-Cover-Problem:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/drucker1.jpg
That is the technik of an old HP DeskJet400 Printer. I thougth I can use the guidiance and the actuation for moving the window-cover-plate. This survived my Dremel:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/drucker2.jpg
But its to large for the Case so I have to do this by my own:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung2.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung1.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung3.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung4.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung5.jpg
The will be more mechanik on the carriage. Every four plates should be on the same level. I hope you understand what I mean. I don't know how to explain this :D The movable plate has to lift about 1cm away from the case so it can't collidate with other parts... Oh man... I have to visit the english-course at my comming up semester :D
While searching vor inspiration on material i found this one:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/trautomat.jpg
The emergency button has to be used on the mod. I just have to look what I can use it for :D
Arkon

Yesterday evening I continued with building the slide-away-mechanism für the cover-plate. The assembly should show me the forces needed to move the components:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung6.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung7.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung8.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/fhrung9.jpg
Unfortunately the movement away from the Case is to rough-running. The cover-plate has to be mounted like shown on the pics. Otherwise I have not enought space for the movement. Caused by this adjustment the bars are clamping in their guiding.
This means the movement has to be stopped until I found an other way for the problem. Damn
Arkon

Little Update:
A member of the german board I'm from gave me the hint to user different materials for the guiding. My father will look at work for alternatives. Actually I'm using aluminium for the bars AND guiding.
The last two houres I planed some details of the front and startet to build it. This is the result:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/front1.jpg
I hope new plates and plexi will be delivered tomorrow. And hopefully my neighbour doesn't get the splitter. I pledged him to split wood for him.
Arkon
02-22-2008, 06:13 PM
Today there is only a text update:
The front is making progres. There are only some cosmetic things to do. Perhaps tomorrow I can show it in motion.
The mecahnism for the cover-plate works lot better with the new materials for the guiding. Some other corrections were done in thie version. A test assembly will show if it finally works.
But another large problem appears: I planed to light the gap between the covering plates with some milky plexiglas as at the "motorized madness"-mod. I thought it will break the light like engraved plexi. But that isn't so. I could also try to light a massiv aluminium plate. There I have to find a solution.
A fake touchscreen will be build for controlling the mechanisms and lightnings.
A german modder will help me to show the status of my alarm device on a LCD.
A compensation tank for the watercooling also has to be build.
Thats it. Tomorrow I will be back with som pics.

The plan for today was to find a solution for my moveable covering plate. If I won't find a working mechanism i would stop this part completely an build a plate which I have to remove manually. What should I say? I DID IT!
I found a solution for my main problem: Caused by the asymetric assembly of covering plate and carriage there are forces which rotate the carriage. While moving in one direction the carriage "jumps" on the guidiance. This problem has been solved by a steel ball at the right position of the carriage. This ball becomes pressed by a M6 screw. The forces produced by the rotatin will now be absorbed by the ball. And it works!!!
Tomorrow I will finally mount the moveable front and make some new Pics.
I'm so happy :D

Hey Arkon!
Thats cool stuff you are working on! I am happy you found a solution for the problem with the sliding plate. Looking forward to see video of it! Did the printer use a normal DC motor? Because all the printers I disasembled yet used stepping motors...
+ Rep. Keep on,

Arkon

yes! the motor is a normal dc motor. the motors for the papermovement are stepping motors. but the one for moving the ink cartridge is a normal DC motor. He gets its position by a light barrier

Germans not only make great cars, they're also quite adept at case building too! Somehow, I'm not surprised!!! :D
And don't worry about your English--you have better command of the English language than some Americans do.
+rep, this looks cool. I will be watching.

Unfortunately I have to tell you that i won't be able to continue with the "external" modification for about 3 weeks. I'm studying mechanical engeneering and my next semester starts on monday. Today I have to pack my stuff and tomorrow I'll drive to my habitation. Unfortunately I have no workshop there. The upcomming weekends I will celebrate my birthday ;) and enter a contest in rescue swimming (my largest hobby :) ) After that I will mod very quickly to finish this mod until 11. April because this is the deadline for the Germand CaseMod Master I will enter hopefully!
But I won't be inactive during this time. I will use it to build the elektronical things like alarm-system, the status-lcd for the alarm and so on. Also I will emulate Froop and create some Movies.
I have to tell you a litte idea a member of the german forum told me: Dunring moving the Front there will be some red LEDs wich will fade during the movement to get a picture of a signal lamp :)
That's it. I hope you aren't mad because there will be only litte updates for a couple of weeks.
we would never be mad,
I really like that system you have for moving the front panel, and i admit i had someone nick my entire SCSI system from my machine at a lan party, a SCSI card worth £300 and 2 HDD's and 4Optical drives one of which held 6 CD's.
When i get some funds together i might make a new system and go to the next iLAN party.
Need to rent some workshop space or a garage.

Sorry to hear this one get put aside for a little bit, but life does have it's priorities.
I'm liking the front panel better then some other cases, where they have little doors and whatnot, because they jerk and bounce.
How are you going to run the motor when it boots up?
Arkon
03-02-2008, 07:07 AM
All the electronical mods will be suplyed by an additional PSU. Perhaps an old Notbook-PSU wich will deliver enough Amperes. The motor in the Front, the one for the coveringplate, the alarm-system an perhaps my fake-touchscreen will be supplyed by this extra PSU. So i can move the Front an covering-plate although the system alread shut down. Over even while it's booting.
wut? no updates dou to real life :O
dude... there is no real life! only AFK.
Arkon
03-02-2008, 06:01 PM
real life is where the pizzaman commes from :D
A member of the german board I'm from programmed me a microcontroler to display the status of my alarm-system on a 16x2 LCD WITHOUT a running OS. Today he send me a small video which I have to show you!
glTbO_Ic11c
The first row schows the if the the system is armed or not. The second row shows if all sensores are "ready". For example: The Case stands on a bewel table an the sensor in one of the foots is not correct activatet the alarm will starts once the system gets armed. The displayed status will be changed by a 5V signal per row.

I was a little bored the last couple of houres so I build my Case in Cinema4D to make some animations. Also I thought about the water reservior. And this is what I propably will build:

Looking good. How many sensors for the alarm are there going to be? And which parts will they cover? All four feet? Side Panel? What about alarms for attached items? (Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, etc.)
-edit-
I forgot what i was gonna say...
Oh yeah, is there gonna be a language switch so you can have the display show in english or german?

Nice job so far looking forward to seeing the finished product!
Could you use the emergency stop button to close the door, kind of like emergency lockdown? You could also incorporate the LED into the button as well, mount the LED in the middle of the button and have it light up when the panel goes down, then when you push it the LED dims as it goes up.
Arkon
03-10-2008, 09:48 AM
Where I place the sensors I don't even know jet. Of course there will be one in one of the feet. I think that will last. Also there will be a sensor for every sidepanel an one that will monitor the plate covering the connections on back side. A separate monitoring for the attached items like keyboard, mouse ect. is not planed. I think the backplate will do this job. And this one will be monitored.
A language-switch for the LCD will not be added. My case will probably never leave Germany :)
The emergency button will close the window and the front door immediatly. My 3D-Key will reset the "emergency-mode" so the window and the door will move back in position. Perhaps some LEDs will blink when the Case is in "emergency-mode".
During the afternoon I will up a little Trailer i made over the last days. I just have to add some sound. Afterwards I will start to plan my moving water reservior so I can build it when I'm back in my workshop.
Also I have to thank the admins for putting my Case on the front page even I'm not able to show you progress.
just came to think of how much i like the idea:D... build it as sweet as you make it sound!

The program is use is AfterEffects.
Actually I work on the plan for my water reservior. Can anyone send me a datasheet of plugs like this one (http://www.watercooling.de/catalog/winkel_einschraubverschraubung_10_8_1_4_-p-16425.html) ? I need the size of it.

Funny, I just started working on some AE tutorials before reading that. Have you seen http://videocopilot.net? Some great stuff there.
And i'm no help when it come to water cooling, maybe ask down in the cooling section.

I DID IT! Not the complete Case but the larges projekt on the case: The moveable cover-plate. Here is a total overview of the mechanism:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik1.jpg
The final version is not very simular to the first one. Only the idea survived the building. The actuation will now be done by a striped servo (only motor and gear. no electronic):
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik3.jpg
The movement won't be done by the drive beld of the first version. Instead of this i use a normal wire which I can make as long as I need it so the size of the drive beld doesn't limit the movement
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik7.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik10.jpg
I will call the movement of moving the cover-plate apart x-movement. Also there is a y-movement which is necessary to detach the plate bevor the x-movement starts. How I realised it you will se on the next pics:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik9.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik8.jpg
On the pics above you can also see the position switches. They can be place anywhere on the white angle for a better adjusting:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/mechanik6.jpg
The threaded bars can also be adjusted like I need it.
The complete mechanism will be placed above the mainboard. But there has actually the powersupply his place. I had to remove metal where the supply lies on to get a flat level. I hope you understand what I mean :D :
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/netzteil2.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/netzteil1.jpg
So I have to find a new place for my supply:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/netzteil3.jpg
Also I cut a hole as large as possible to get an idea of the dimensions for the window.
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/Seitenwand2.jpg
Additionally I replaced the motor/gear by an other striped servo:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/front3.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/front2.jpg
That's it for today.
its going great and i was thiking something here since you are going to protect your system have you think about waterproof it would be great

Okay. An other update: The cover made some progress:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/aussen1.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/front4.jpg
The other side is still in build.
Between the plates you can see an opening. This is the "Exit" for the mechanism to move the winow covering plate:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/front4.jpg
It will be closed with these brushes you can mount at doors:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/buerste.jpg
This is my temporary controll for the covering plate:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/schalter.jpg
And thats my workshop:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/werkstatt.jpg
The first plates are equipped with LEDs. Unfortunaly I'm out of stock:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg73/Arkon_MT/beleuchtet1.jpg
The next week I will creat the electrical parts. Next friday I have to register to the german masters!! And my mod is not as much completed as I wish.

Sweet, that looks really awesome with the LED's. How are they mounted?
Arkon

There is a layer of 4mm plexi-glass between the upper plates and the mainplate. In this plexi I drilled some 3mm holes and fixed the LEDs with some glue.

Today I have some pre-final pics for you. The external cover is nearly complete. On the weekend I will cover the inside around the mainboard, the back where the connections are and the area around the DVD. Also I have to prepare 150 LEDs -.- The electronic for the movements and alarmsystem are also nearly completed. Yesterday I registrated myself for the german masters.
