The Discovery channel is haing a special about retro-engineering dinosaurs. They say that within 50 years they'll be able to recreate a dinosaur like creature from a bird. What do you think? Should we bring dinosuars back?

It will help with the over population problem......

Scientists have already genetically recreated numerous mammals. So what's going to stop them?

To quote jurassic park:

"God creates dinosaurs. God kills dinosaurs. God makes man. Man kills god. Man creates dinosaurs."

Exactly what I was thinking!! Don't these people pay attention?

I don't doubt they'll try to do it, scientists are prone to finding out what could happen without considering the impact. I swear the planet will be destroyed or something and behind it well find some scientist saying "I just wanted to see if I could do it." If they do this can we at least confine them to some island no one wants.

I am all for it. Why not try a mammoth first, and THEN move back to dinosaurs? We could have a travel-through-time zoo. In new york. And then have a real life godzilla/jurassic park. I'll get the real-life popcorn.

And then in the future, we can have a real life take over of the world by dinosaurs.

You guys watch too many movies _and_ believe them.

This is cool science. My concern though is that nothing good will come of it. Although in the end it may help scientists to under stand more about the processes occurring in nature. May also help understand the intricacies of cloning.

I for one would love a genetically modified velociraptor protecting the homestead.

Actually I've never seen Jurassic Park.

Of course, I wasn't serious. A trained velociraptor... is there such a thing?

Hard to know since they're kind of.... well... extinct.

If you buy into the theory of how smart they were (or how smart scientists _think_ they were), then yes it is plausible.

But if you buy into the whole "earth is only a few thousand years old" theory, then these are just bones planted by the Devil to make us doubt and there is no dna to clone from.

Your choice...

I have very vague memories of that show. I think I was like, 5 when it aired. And If velociraptors are as smart as scientists, think, then we better not even try to clone them from DNA we are extrapolating. I don't want to have to choose between a republican, a democrat, AND a prehistoric dinosaur when I am old enough to vote. I would be afraid of not voting for the one with big, sharp teeth and thousands of his brethren manning my oil rig.

That just reminded of the movie Grandma's Boy in a way, when he says
"Anybody can get past a dog. But NOBODY f**ks with a lion."
hahaah. But wow that would be so awesome having a velociraptor as a front door guardian! lol

They can't. The story "the most dangerous game" would make no sense anymore. They can't do it the book legion is among the most feared in the world

Well, I'm going to guess that our scientists have atleast heard of Jurassic Park if not seen the movie themselves. Hopefully they won't be stupid about this. I think that if they do try to create a dinosaur, they will start with something non-threating. Probably a small herabavor. I think the amount we can learn from that alone is stagering. I also doubt they will create a herd of them. If they do recreate dinosaur's, it will most likly be a single creature withing a lab. It may not even grow to fullsize.

Either way if they can do this it will be a huge leap in genetic engineering. I just want to see how long until they can apply that knowledge to humans. But thats a different debate.

I must be the only other person who caught that broadcast. How this was innitially discovered was when a paleontologist was cleaning a bone and wanted to remove some build up on the bone. She had a college run the bone through an acid wash which revealed that the once soft tissue was soft and plyable. Under a microscope it was revealed that there were blood vessels and cells but no useable dns.

When the show talked about recreating a dinosaur, they started with birld because it is believed that they still contain anchient dna. In the show they demonstrate on chicken eggs that during the development of the chick embryo infact starts with 14 vertebra in the tail (the same amount as the dinosaur believed to be the ansestor of all birds) then they fuse together to create the 4 vertebra of the common chicken. With the introduction of a certin protien into the embryo, they alter how the gene's react in this fusing process and stop the bones from fusing together. The result is a chicken with a long dinosaur like tail (realitive to its body mass).

You wont see a dinosaur unless it has a living realative with many of the anchient genetic markers intact.

Did anyone actually watch this show? I like the geneticly mutated flys. There was one which had feet on its head insted of anteni and another one which was wingless and looked like super fly compared to the one beside it.

I didn't see the show but thats kinda what I figured. And I have seen the mutatued flys before. Those things are crazy. I like the one with eyes all over its body. It looked pretty cool with the red spots all over the place.
