basically its just an 80mm 12volt fan with a green plastic shroud to funnel the air

I took one of those out of my old HP comp, and it lowered the case temp by like 5 or so degrees. I don't know if its exactly like the dell one though.

On Some Dell Models There is no CPU fan. Just a heat sink the little green thing is a funnel that catches fresh air blown into the case by a fan then forces it over the cpu heatsink and into the case. Unless your going to change the heatsink on the CPU to one with a fan...Don't get rid of it. If you have your heart set on deep 6ing it take it off gently (it's held in by two little tabs) and check and see if there is a fan on the CPU.

Any way you do it check your temps closely after word to make sure everythings back in right and working (don't want to cook a chip!)

The HP one i had was a fan mounted to the back case blowing out, then the funnel and the fan on the CPU heatsink blowing in. I still don't know what the people at HP were thinking, oh well.
