If you're a gamer, 9600GT is definitely not the way to go. Half as many shaders as an 8800GT, and only slightly increased clock speeds. If you're buying a new video card tomorrow, get an 8 series. If you're waiting, get a 9800. Don't get a 9600GT.

This is definitely a middle rung Video card, just like the 5600, 6600, 7600 and the 8600 were before. Just because its the first of the 9 series doesn't mean its the top of the line card. The 8600GT was no faster then my 7900, it just added a few feature sets and DX10 of course. From the tests I have seen its performance is not too far behind the 8800GT. I did notice on VR-Zone, they decided to put it up against a overclocked 8800GT and it still got pretty close in alot of cases. Also the 9600 is about 100 bucks less then the 8800GT's not including rebates etc. So if your not going to invest $200+ into your video card budget.. This is probably the best card for you at the moment. I was just surprised that they released an x600 card first, normally we have to wait a few months for the $500+ cards to be out before the budget stuff is released.

Not really, they fit their purpose very well. They are a competitive mid-range product that costs under $200. Yeah the 8800GT is better, however the 9600GT is still about 2x faster than the pathetic 8600.

Plus it said 2 of em got 101 fps in a game whereas a gtx got 73, so that means 2 of em for 300(the price of a 512 gts) gets a signifigant power boost over the gtx.

But I do get your point. Then you also have to assume the game fully supports Sli (which more new games do but there are a bunch which don't).

I've run the whole Sli thing before, and 360$ or even 300$ I would be waiting to see what the higher card can do, as there will be one that price range eventually.

2 of them may beat one GTX, but instead of buying 2 cards and wasting a PCI-E slot, why not buy one card that's almost as good as 2 combined?

9600GT's are running ~$180 - $210. 8800GT's are running ~$199 (256MB) - $299, with the 512MB cards starting at $230 ($210 with rebates). Why buy something inferior with a price difference so small?

We need a comparison graph of the two cards. I'm so confused anymore. Which card is actually better? Is the 8800 series better than the 9600 series, but the 9600 series costs half the price? Then whats the performance of the 9600 compared to the 8800, because I would rather pay, lets just say, $300 for one card than pay $300 for two cards that is only slightly better than the one card, because you could still save up for that second card and then be better than the two 9600 cards, unless those two other cards are almost the same performance as two 8800's, which if thats the case, then I would rather have those because they are half the price and almost just as good.

They don't destroy the GTX, but it isn't a 3 FPS difference either. I think it's around like 10-20 FPS for most games. That's why I don't think it's worth it to SLI two 9600GT's. The performance isn't that much better, so save yourself the PCI-E slot and settle for the slight FPS drop.

Say I don't want to spend more than $200 on a video card. And $200 is really really pushing my budget. Is the 9600GT $80 better than the 8600GT? Should I just splurge for the cheap end of the 8800's? Which 8800 would that be? OR should I wait a month or two for the other 9 series models to come out and hope that the 8800's drop in price considerably?

id say go for a 512mb 9600gt if you dont plan to upgrade for a while as more games will be using more video ram. the 256mb 8800gt will probably run into slowdowns but will be faster initially

I say, so what if it sucks, the more exiting thing is that this release means the high end 9 series is in the near future. I'd say about one month.

Anyone know what new features the high end 9series is going to bring? I'm going to look it up when I have time but if anyone knows that would be great.

I know the G94 doesn't bring anything new that the G92 doesn't have, was just wondering if there were any new features in the new high end cards.
