controlling or programing computer lights

is there any kind of software or hardware that can be used to say make the lights in my computer come on and off in a certain sequence.

There are several different ways to do just that. Main ingredient is a controller. This actually also be achieved by wiring the proper leads directly to the parallel port, but I really don't recommend it. As for the controller, there are serial and usb controller on the market, that with a little coding can do just what you are looking for. The only one that comes to mind off the top head is Phidgets, has a usb interface controller that can be used to turn on or off or even fade upto 64 LEDs. http://www.phidgets.com/
