The most effecient method of personal transportation.
Specs on my bicycle:
My bike: Giant Rincon (2008 model)
Specs:
24-speed
20in Frame
Front/back disc brakes
Front "100x" shocks (100mm travel, adjustable sensitivity)
Shimano SiS shifters (Front/back)
Lizard Skin tubes (you know, the ones with the thick plastic to keep punctures from happening) with Slime in them
looking at getting some Shimano parts, like a whole new drivetrain and brake system with bigger rotors and a stronger crank, the TruVATIV crank system that's on my bike right now keeps breaking)
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/422/rinconanthraciteblackum0.jpg
That's a picture of the model of Rincon I have.
Back in a few minutes of my (mud and dirt covered, ;) ) Rincon.
So, Does anybody else on TBCS ride? I especially like riding in the creeks in my town, they go from dry sand to wet rocks to mud within a mile of each other. Hard ride to pull off, but it's so worth it.

Heh. Part of the reason why I got the Rincon and not the next model down was the disc brakes. I've almost been hit by cars twice in the past week (I'm not the safest road biker or biker in general) and my brakes have saved my proverbial rear end. I swear, you pull both handles and once and you are no longer moving, regardless of your current speed.
Yeah, my tires are pretty fat. At least compared to what I'm used to and most other mountain bikes. It helps tons with the riding through the mud. Fat, knobbly tires. I want to get another set of tires to turn into studded ones, but I don't think I have the tolerance on my frame (we're talking about less than a half inch tolerance between either tire and some part of the frame) and that would require getting both sets of wheels to my location and back. One on the bike, one stored. Since I can't drive anywhere and all.
I want to do Downhill biking. I might see about going to Mount Tampalpias here in the bay area and riding up the mountain just to bomb it back down, then call it a day, and hope nothing's broken (although it probably will be).
Funny how I'm so damned lazy yet riding is one of my favorite things. I must have rode 4-5mi on tuesday (which is a lot for somebody who didn't ride for about two years and is horribly out of shape) and by the time I got home I couldn't feel my legs. I managed to break three sprockets (teeth got jacked up) and loosen my brake cable a bit. Took it by the shop and they fixed it all (huzzah warranties and free labor for a year).
I think tomorrow I'll do some downhill road riding after I go take care of getting a new camo jacket and doing a photoshoot for art class.
Kind of a strange question... Ever ridden on train tracks? It's so bumpy. my hands kept hitting the brake levers when I did it. My knuckles hurt now. It was so fun, though. Kadunkadunkadunkaduna. Even with the shocks on the front re-calibrated to be soft, it was really bad =p
EDIT: Cheapo bike?! With front and rear suspension? Man, my bike was ~$550 (That's USD) and it's only got front suspension (although the disc brakes and adjustable shocks probably didn't help the price).
MSRP on the Rincon is $420. My Rincon has, extra to the base model: Slime'd tires with lizard skin tubes, normal bolt on the seat, a front and rear light, a bike-mounted pump and a water bottle holder. That's it. =p

mine was i think 299.99 at Canadian tire (Canadian) so i guess not a full blown cheapo but i would still call it a cheapo bike since its from a store like Canadian Tire.
do to my taking the dam thing apart my rear suspension creeks when i go on bumps, very annoying. i have to wrap paper towel under the spring and soak it in oil to stop the leaks for all of amount 30 minutes.

I dont have pictures of my old bike anymore. I wish i did though. I had a Kuwahara Orbit with custom everything. I had 7 piece bars, gt neck & headset, soup can pegs, agent rims, 90deg lean back post, gt seat, fishbone 3piece crank, meat grinder petals, custom grey paint. I had lots more parts too, its just been so long i cant remember them all.
The best thing i ever did with it was install a double thick 2 piece sprocket and ran with a tracktor chain. That stoped all the knee hits on the neck when the chain used to come loose and fall off.

Oh man, I would probably not ride a bike if it squeaked at me like that. Reminds me, I was riding home and I saw this other bike that was clicking and creaking real badly, I almost felt sorry for it because it was so obviously out of disrepair. =/

I used to do trick riding on my BMX bikes before I got the Rincon, and I can attest to the fact that hitting yourself in the face with your knee is indeed no fun.
35 chain sucks on BMX bikes. =p

Bikes is another one of my hobbies too!
I have an old Schwinn mountain bike that still works well and then a newer GT Compe (BMX). I normally try not to spend too much money on them but I do like to build random ones. I just find parts from the trash and try to improvise to meet what I wanted. I have made a few normal bikes for people but most the time I just make really goofy impractical ones.

My bike actually had a manufacture defect but kuwahara isnt an easy company to get ahold of so i was stuck with it. The rear upper forks were not alligned right so the chain rubbed on the frame which wore through it in a few months. Thats when i went to the lawnmower shop and got a real chain. It wouldnt even matter if the tire was loose or anything, there was no chance of that fat chain falling off or rubbing through.
Man was it ever a heavy bike, 75lbs and i could still manage to bunny hop it over a park bench.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist, here's my bike:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/rstakelbeek/IMAG1110.jpg
Special features:
1. front and rear drum-brakes (are they called drum brakes in english?)
2. standard slide-thing lock on the rear, big chain-lock for the rest of the bike. (yes, you do need that here...)
3. 3-speed transmission (only one working though)
4. a standard ring-a-ding bell, not working because I tried to fix it...
shot from the front
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/rstakelbeek/IMAG1111.jpg
Another special feature, reflecting tires. when it's dark and you shine a bright light on it, it's almost as if I have neon-rims
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/rstakelbeek/IMAG1112.jpg
Transmission chain. Nice and rusty, need to get some butter on it again.

Disc brakes usually, but drum brakes do exist. I don't know if or how they've been used on bikes.

I've got an extremely cheap ($90) Wally World special that I've abused for the past couple years. Even took it bird hunting two years ago. Dunno if I'll do that again though--nearly toppled it over with my shotgun strapped to the handlebars.
I'll get some pics up tomorrow most likely.

I have a Giant also. I bought it back in 2001. The only real difference between mine and Omega's bike is the top bar, I dont have the bend in it and I have regular brakes. I couldn't afford the upgrade to disc breaks then. Shimano break system and trigger shifters. That bike is beautiful. Mine was red where Omega's is gray. That bike is a dream to ride. Although I havent ridden much lately. Been living at an apartment and I dont want to lock it outside and my roomate would probably kill me if I parked it in the condo. I wore through my first sets of brake pads in a year. I went everywhere.

I've currently got a Bike E recumbent bike. Lemme tell ya, this thing is NICE! People have said it's harder to go uphill on recumbents but I beg to differ... it's actually easier since you can use all your muscle instead of having to use your weight. Too bad I got pissed one day and broke the seat, gotta fix that soon, lol. Here's a pic but mine doesn't have the shocks.

Sweet bikes guys. I use mine more than walking. I'll have to get some pics up. Its a 3 year old Trek 4300. Nothing really special. Just recently parts have started wearing out. I'm going to look into getting some new sprockets for it, break pads are getting thin, tires need replacement (innertubes should be fine), and I need to reactivate my rear gear switch (was cleaning the gears and had to disconnect the cable, I've been to lazy to attach it properly. I'll get some pics later, its pretty snazzy.
Omega, suspension isn't really that great in bikes. Well, its preference. IMO it sucks. I have my front suspension tightened as much as I can for the stiffest ride possible. When you pedal your energy goes into making the suspension compress and less is put into the movement of the bike. (also why more air in tires is better unless your doing alot of trail riding/mudding). I do want disk break though. I hate the squeel when regular brakes are wet, plus its hard to stop.

Oh, now I have to get pictures!
My neighbor and another friend of his got stoned off their asses and made a chopper bicycle... well, two actually, but only one's ridable. It's got 24" rear and 26" front tires on it right now; we're considering drilling and bolting on a rear derailleur, and making it a five-speed... If we did that, though, we'd have to replace the Harley chain with a generic mountain-bike chain.
The thing's a pain in the ass to work on; it's partially constructed of tube steel, so you have to stick a wrench into the end and turn the bolts a tiny bit at a time... maybe 1/6 turn. Then, once they're free, you have to hammer the frame apart. The front forks are easier, but we had to use a car jack for the rear.
Anyway, my less interesting 'daily driver' is a Gary Fisher Gitche Gumee, a '98 or so (bought it used), that's taken its share of abuse and neglect (I really ought to lube the chain). It has Shimano gearing which has held up very well. The Altus derailleur is supposedly a light-duty piece, but I've laid the bike down a few times on dirt roads, etc. and it's taken it just fine. And by no means am I a gentle shifter!
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/3906/cyclesob5.jpg
The brakes are very good, considering that they're not discs (which is good, discs are just one more thing to bend). I'm on my original front tire and a good way through my second rear... I intentionally put 'er sideways on occasion. :D The rack is Swiss, I forget the company, but it's hauled 20+ pounds of dead beaver, and the speedo/odo/clock is a slightly flimsy but functional Sigma Sport unit.
All in all, I can't complain.

Dont leave your bike unattended for one sec.
Me and my friends were at some jumps, and we were just walking around hanging around not on the bikes. 3 spanish kids come in, and 1 goes right for my bike and starts riding away while the other one is saying give it back.Me and my friend were chasing him while my other friend flagged down the police since they were near by. The Police got them(dont know what they did to them) he asked how old i was and said if they wanted me to say anything to them and i said no.
I almost **** myself, because i just bought the bike 3 days ago.

Ok, so I love the cruiser. No duh right?
Couple things though.. I already miss having music. I *could* just wear my ipod.. but thats not safe. So I started looking into some mountable options.
The verdict? NOTHING BUT CRAP is available. Therefore, build my own. :) I'm sketching out the first draft of this project now, and hopefully can get the plexi (oooohh.. sexy) cut tonight or tomorrow, and start bending it up to mount the ipod and the speakers to the handlebars.
Next up, lights. With only reflectors on the pedals, the bike is a bit sketchy for evening/night riding. I already considered going with a prebuilt light kit, but man, where's the fun in that? Besides, I have so many LED's already, might as well make something myself! Yay!

Projector-mounted LED array for the headlights.
rechargeable battery & low power (but decent volume) speakers for it, too.
I'm going to look into getting another bike. A road bike. I ride a mountain bike (The Rincon) but it's heavy and it's not an easy ride first thing in the morning.
I also need to look into a new crank system. I have the TruVativ Blaze on the Rincon right now, but the left crank arm keeps coming loose.

Done a fair bit of bike repair since my last post. Had the chance to ride a couple Specialized bikes; friggin' sweet overall. I'm a bit jealous.
The Gary Fisher now has a new (old) seat, and a rear fender from an ancient Raleigh, held on with a couple bolts, an old brake pad, two seat quick-releases, and a small C-clamp:
http://xs229.xs.to/xs229/08280/dscf0269__large_833.jpg
And then, there's the chopper. My neighbor and a stoner friend of his welded it together years ago, but my neighbor only dragged it home over the winter... Since then we've gotten it actually working, with a 26" front and 24" rear wheel (the latter from a ten-speed, but with no derailleur and an ex-Harley-Davidson chain, it's a manually-set two-speed) and (of course) no brakes:

$175 for a frame that's usually $800+. Major score.
