Looking for a way to cool my laptop, (i know easy, right?) The catch is I'm making it for my CAM class, while i'm designing it i wanted to through in a couple of extra things. Heres my plan, make the cooling pad, you know like the ones you can buy just about anywhere for 100-150 bucks. I would like to include a usb hub since I only have one on my laptop, a 7-1 type card reader to hard wire inside the pad to the usb hub guts, also two 80mm fans to power for the ubs guts also. If anyone can help me with the wiring i can design and build it. BTW i want to use my current usb port as the power for the whole thing, i need a usb hub that doesn't require an ac adpetor for power. I thinks thats it.

Thanks guys & gals

what you are wanting to do won't work with only using one usb port to power the entire thing. A single USB port does not have the power to support a usb hub, fans, and a 7 in 1 reader. It just can't handle it. you are going to have to use some sort of ac adapter to power it, its the only chance on making eveything work that you want to.

to add to what nexus said above ..

you have to remimber that fans run off 12V and USB power is 5V and and very low 5v at that.

ok thanks thats what i needed to know

I found some 80mm 5vdc fans
http://www.buyextras.com/ev80dc5vbabe.html

is it posible for them to work

also here is the usb/card reader looking at
http://www.meritline.com/119-039-001.html

plan an taking the case off of the card reader and just using the guts and if possable wiring the two 5vdc fans into the usb power from the card reader.

just wondering if you think that would work thanks

Since a single USB port can handle upto 0.5Amps and each fan takes 0.15Amps. And you have 2 fans..... the card reader better not take up more than 0.2Amps. And if it does takes up 0.2Amps then you won't be able to use those side USB ports.
