I have a Acer X221W (21"), and I've been trying to figure out a way to run games at a lower resolution without filling the sides. My rig can't even play CS:S @ 1440 x 900 without sub-30 and sometimes sub-20 frame rates.

I'm upgrading to a dual-core sometime soon (probably an E2180) but until then I'd like to play games at a kind-of "reverse letterbox" if you know what I mean. Is there any way to do this?

Theres an option in the nvidia control panel to vertical letterbox 4:3 resolutions. Its under "Change Flat Panel Scaling".

A few monitors, such as mine, can do that on themselves. However when I installed the 8600GTS temporarily the card automatically stretches the image :(.

The monitor itself may have some sort of option in the setup to stretch the image to fill the screen.

Thanks for the tip Indy. That worked for me!
