View Full Version : Cheap outboards?

Does anyone know where to buy a cheap outboard for like a really small boat or raft? Quality isn't so much of a concern by the way, since its for an old aluminum fishing boat that was smashed by a tree during a bad storm. My friend and I are attempting to restore it, since its not in that bad of condition. We just want a little something to go out and play around on during the summer months, and since I'll be turning 21 this year, what better way to celebrate than a day out on the boat, fishing, with a six pack of cold brewskies?
:P
He was thinking of something in the twenty dollar to sixty dollar range by the way, but I'm not even sure such things even exist. lol

"Hey guys, I'm turning 21 this year, where can i get a $20 motor for a smashed up old tin boat so I can put me and my friend in it to go out and drink beer on the water!?"
You win for the most mindlessly stupid question/Post of the week. Congrats!

Woo hoo! Alright! I've finally accomplished something in life to earn me an award!
Can I have a print out of my award so I can stick it onto my refrigerator?

Craigslist might be the way to go for this.. maybe you could find someone who needs computer help/parts for a (partial/full) trade?

I've got to agree with Chrimson Sky. You're better off staying perfectly sober if you're going to drive a rickety old worn out boat. I'm still chuckling over it.
I also agree with Luke122, craigslist or newspaper ads will probably be your best bet to find an old inexpensive outboard motor. I would get one that already runs because the parts are pretty expensive.

I think I may of found a winner, not really sure though. Here it is (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/242551/377%20710/0/electric%20outboard/Primary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710&Ne=0&Ntt=electric%20outboard&Ntk=Primary%20Search&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&Nao=0&Ns=0&keyword=electric%20outboard&isLTokenURL=true&storeNum=5005&subdeptNum=10&classNum=820). It looks like they got a lovely hundred dollar one toward the end of that list. Unless I'm mistaken?
I love boating, but I know nothing about it really. Maybe if my parents and/or relatives would actually let me borrow the boat once in awhile I would know more. But nooo, they rather I endanger my life on a bent out of shape, epoxied together, death trap. lol
By the way, how well does epoxy actually hold? We were planning on using it for small cracks and rivets that were missing. Lol I should of filmed our "lets see if it floats as it is now, in its current condition" test. It wasn't a rock, but man, it filled with water faster than we could bail it!
lol good times, good times...
I think you can safely expect a very wet member here in these next couple days/weeks. :D

Before you go out, could you sign this here insurance policy? I'll share 10% with your family...
Oh and Crimson, I want one of those "T's" too...
Reminds me of a funny story;
I used to fish a lot when I was younger and the place we went to rent boats had a strict "No Alcohol" policy. One of my older friends used to bring his own inflatable life vest. Filled with beer. He also could not swim. You know what happens next... Yes he fell overboard with a life vest full of beer and almost drowned. He is year to year my favorite vote for the Darwin Awards since he does stupid sheeite like that all the time. Not sure how he has lived this long. And he has 4 kids...

You could take a boating course to show your interest, plus learn about boating and then maybe they might trust you to take the boat. There's a lot more to boating than just throwing something in the water and seeing if it floats.
But nooo, they rather I endanger my life on a bent out of shape, epoxied together, death trap. lol

Make sure to wear your life jacket (not beer filled). I don't know what the laws are where you live, but here we just have to have a life jacket for each person in the boat. Over a certain age, people don't have to wear them, they just have to be in the boat. With a boat like that, a life jacket won't do any good for you if it floats away.:)
Airbozo, that's hilarious. Did your friend ever own a fifth wheel and a chevy blazer? LINK (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13717) so I don't hijack again.;)

*Slaps forehead*
Well I can't blame you guys for being worried or anything, after all, you don't know anything about me. So lets throw out a few random facts about me, if only so you guys don't worry about yours truly ...cuz you know, you can't deny that I make the forums a more.. err.. "interesting" place. :-P
Fact 1: I hate the taste of beer. I only have it around to make me seem more manly around "the ladies" or for my friends who are always getting "the ladies". I don't actually drink it, I'm pretty good with making excuses about why not too.
I actually have a cooler with about seven cases of different branded six pack beers, so if any of you are ever in the area, feel free to stop by and maybe we'll play some poker or something. ...I'll of course have the juice box. :-p
Fact 2: I live by the lake. No really, I mean that literally. My front yard is a driveway, a guest A-frame cabin, a shop, a hangover area for extra parking, a cement making thinger building and an occasional deer, turkey, raccoon and/or sometimes moose that just happens to stumble by through the forest that I live in (like camping year round! :D). My backyard however is a medium length zig zag walkway (handicap accessible I guess) that leads down to a decent sized beach, fire pit area, boat house, grandfathered in cement dock and the beautiful lake coeur d'alene. I'll have to take pictures sometime!
Fact 3: I know how to drive a boat. I have driven a few different models a few different times. I know "the rules of the water" because my dad screams them into my ear every time I make any sudden movements. (He was in the coast guard by the way) *sigh* Its for the best I suppose, at least I wont ever forget anything. ...lol stop laughing, that wasn't a joke. ;-)
Fact 4: The final fact for the day, because I was feeling bored and now I'm not. I'm "that" guy. You know the one. The one who is always "ruining the fun" by being a safety dork. To be honest, most of my friends horrify me on a daily basis, but I go along with it because they make me. But you can always bet that I'll be the one telling people what to do and how to do it and why. If they don't like why, then "just in case" usually works. How can you argue with "just in case"? You can't, thats why I use it. :D
Fact 5: So I lied, get over it. When people start "preaching to me" about safety and all that jazz, I like to tell them to shut up, stop being an uptight and learn how to have some fun. No really, I actually say that, even if they are my elders and that they might get "upset with me". ...unless they are my grandma and grandpa, who I love too much to give a hoot. :)
I don't care if "I'll poke my eye out" or if "I'll get stuck in the tree if I climb too high". Its called living life, try it sometime. (observation of present day life for me: I never see anyone outside anymore, always inside, watching TV. Right, cuz thats living) ...(I exempt myself on the grounds of that the internet is SO much cooler than TV, which I'm a firm believer in that it will rot your mind and turn you into a "couch potato".)
Listen, to all you worry warts out there, I'll ask you a question. How often do you watch the news? Because if your like everyone around here, then you probably watch TV nonstop all day long. The news isn't exactly an accurate example of "what its like out there, in the real world". Here is a small list of what you might think will happen, but won't;
Your not going to get shot, your not going to get into a car accident, your not going to randomly combust into flames, yes that would be awesome, no it wouldn't be if you died or were seriously injured, you won't be hijacked by terrorists at any given moment, flight IS a safe way to travel, guns don't kill people-people kill people, "statistics" is a loosely thrown around "thing" that people like to use to give them an edge over someone else. (Here is one for you, btw- ninety seven percent of people will believe you if you use the word "statistic" somewhere in what you are saying)-(which brings me to my next point), if you think that Jack Thompson is a saint for bringing video games to the attention of the public for what they really are... Then firstly, your an idiot and a bigot, even though I don't know what a bigot is and its rather hypocritical of me to say that your an idiot. Secondly, by all means, stay inside for the rest of your life, I prefer it.
Lastly and most importantly; people on the internet... EXIST. We're real! SURPRISE! *confetti falls from everywhere* Amazing isn't it? We're real people, with real thoughts, with real opinions that are usually backed up by many many sources. Sources that are, I would have to say, much more reliable than yours. Which includes; "that lady from across the street", your "crazy uncle from WWII" and "Fox News".
Sorry, I like to stress that last one. People all around me seem to think that "the internet, whatever that is" is just some place that "hip young people go to do drugs and other naughty stuff". *sigh*

OK I take back my statements. YOU DO NEED TO LEAVE THE HOUSE AND BE ON A BOAT.
jeeze.....dude---back away from the internet, or get a blog.
It's true, young people are being exploited for the sake of litigious law-makers and adults who want to micro-manage and control every facet of your lives. OK here goes a "WHY WHEN I WAS YOUNG!" rant:
WHY, WHEN I WAS YOUNG!,
We had REAL monkey bars in the playgrounds. Sharp-edged and dangerous, we returned home daily with cuts, bruises and cement rashes. No one asked questions, we just washed off the blood, turned on the TV and watched whatever was on the 4:30 Movie
2es-lfRSDOI&NR=1
Or if nuthin was on TV, we'd play with our toys. Plenty of choking hazards, strangulation strings, eye pokers and yeah---more sharp edges.

Oh yes, much more to come. Stay Tuned.

Wow. Some if not all of those are really cool games and toys!
What the heck ever happened to stuff like that?? ...oh right, video games came along. In what was it? The 70's? Too bad really, I mean video games are great and all, but it really should of been taught to be more of an "in moderation" thing, not that they knew what was going to happen in the future, where everyone is pretty much addicted and/or would rather spend hours upon hours in front of a screen on a daily basis instead of outside enjoying the real world, but I suppose back then it was just fine, since it wasn't so huge. But now all kids do is play Video Games and all adults do is watch TV and tell their kids not to take risks and to be careful and don't do this or that because you might get hurt... :dead: Anyways...
Bing Bang Boing looked awesome! What ever happened to that game?? Did it not work properly or something? They should bring it back and make it even better than it was back then, since we have the technology to do that. But then again, its probably not the greatest investment. You would have to design a computer game out of the idea to have it be successful in todays market. ...and if you did bring it back, in non-virtual reality form, you would have to maim the hell out of it because of certain safety regulations or whatever you call them. Hmm.
Damnit, I need to stop talking so much... lol

Crimson, thanks for the multiple flashbacks in that last video. I had pretty much everyone of those cars, including the crashup ones. Honestly though that is the first time I have ever seen the Bing Bang Boing, but it reminded me instantly of this;

Zephik; We are all just funnin' with ya, and I for one think you should launch from your backyard with a web cam pointed in your general direction. Although I would not hook up the motor until I knew I would be able to make it back to shore and just use the oars...
Oh, and the obligatory;

Sorry Zephik. At my job there is always a very real possibility of killing or seriously injuring people, so we constantly are reminding each other of things that we all know but for fear of complacency, we always want to keep it fresh in our minds. I didn't mean to come off preachy.
It seems that some of us older ones here are about the same age. I had that dragster, and lots of those smash up derby cars. Those things were awesome.
Who ever wore a helmet biking back then? Hell, I remember driving the car sitting on Dad's lap when I was about 5. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that rode on the platform above and behind the back seat of the car (where the back speakers are). It's amazing that anybody grew out of childhood back then.
