I got a little betta splenden fish from a wedding. I posted the story here several months ago so I won't rehash it:

A few days ago, he started swimming sideways and My wife was fully prepared to flush the little guy. Fortunately for Finnegan, I understand how to use the internet. The look on her face when she saw me researching Finnegan's problem was priceless. She said, "We are not going to nurse that fish back to health!"
It turned out that he had a problem with his swim bladder that was caused by digestive problems. Folks on-line suggested cutting up a pea and giving him some of it with a toothpick. Now he's a healthy upright swimming betta fish who's finning again. So I guess Finnegan is a really lucky fish.

That's pretty cool. Two years ago we lost power for 6 days during winter and my house dropped to 33 degrees. I have a single Goldfish and was told by everyone that it was going to die. My water heater still worked because it was gas powered. I filled up three 1 liter bottles with VERY hot water and put them in the tank to use as heaters and kept my fish alive!!

That's cool. I would've probably done the same thing before jumping to "lets end this fishes life conclusions".

I had a few gold fish that survived all odds when I lost power this past summer. I had a turtle that made the water very murky. And those fish die really fast with bad water. So I was filtering water by hand and emptying and refilling. The power finally goes back on after a few days. And my turtle ate all of the fish....So much for Jaws (my fish nicknamed for the fact that he was twice as big as the other goldfish and was pushing 7 inches.)

Grats on saving your pet! Glad you didn't give up on little Finnegan :D
As for fish living stories, the S.O. had a fishtank and some fish that she had from 2 years before we met. She had gotten some fish and apparently it ate all of the other fish and not the food, and I guess this was a fish that wasn't supposed to do that kind of thing. Anyway, because of that she just stopped caring for the evil fish and let the tank sit there for 2 years. She was looking at the tank trying to see if there was a fish in there as she hadn't looked in over a year (tank was gross to say the least) and there was the little f$%$er swimming around. I have no clue what he lived on but he did. Think he died within a few months after that, but god was that thing resilient.

The evil fish probably started feeding off of the algae that was growing in there. I think that the tank actually ended up being an accidental biodome, the fish living off the oxygen and food the algae gave while the algae lived off the water in the tank, the sun coming in and the CO2 from the fish.
Crazy.
