They are a great set of speakers, i got them a few years back for use in a budget HTPC. They sound pretty good, the mids are not as high as they should be, but the bass is thumpin'. With a coaxial hookup, the sound is crispy and clean.

Im not really onto these kinds of speakers. But they are defenently kick ass !
( They are better than the ones I have too )
Those are some nice speakers. I can't believe there was a ste selling them for less than $200. My RA had a set last semester that he used as an alarm clock. I think he had them set to go off at 3/4 volume with just a buzzer. And even then he wouldn't get up. But you could hear the buzzer from all around the hall. Very nice set of speakers.

My friend has a set of those, they are AWESOME. You just got to love how they rattle the entire house at half volume. :P

Not unless you were a serious audiophile with trained ears really. The coaxial is very clean, the optical a bit more clean, but barely noticeable even on a DVD movie.

Why can't everyone just use headphones? *Roll eyes*
Just kidding, I've never been one priviledge with speakers. D:

I got mine just over 2 years ago and let me tell you right now: one of the absolute best investments Ive ever made in my life. Mind you I havent made a lot of big purchases, but still...
If adjusted properly these speakers are just about perfect. I got mine connected via optical cable to my Razer Barracuda AC-1 and the sound is crisp! I've compared them to my friend's Bose surround sound, my other friend's Sony and an LG surround sound (all 1KW) and I (and two them) think that mine sounds better. I've been wondering lately how insane their next top model will be...
By the way, Tigerdirect is selling them for $180 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1068250&sku=L23-6334) right now, an amazing deal in my book.

Agreed.. most people wont notice a difference. In fact, some lower end sound cards with built in optical will actually sound worse. :P

I don't have a 7.1 surround sound card or anything though, I have this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-Fast-Track-Pro-Mobile-USB-Audio-MIDI-Interface?sku=241710)
external recording audio box. Looks like no 5.1 surround sound for me... But whatever. I can record 2 instruments, some midi things and output to a pair of headphones and maybe some of these (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileAV40-main.html) bad boys at the same time.
So i'm happy. Maybe once I get money, I could build a purpose-built gaming machine with a sound card and get some of those speakers. Til then... I'm happy with the sony headphones.

I might get 5500's when we move to the new house, to replace the 5300e's
the 5300's will be garage/shop speakers, or living room surround sound
haven't decided yet
