Ok... I can't decide between a AMD Athlon X2 5000 Black edition or a Pentium dual core e2180. What are your opinions? If my budget goes up I will definitely look at better processors but for now this is what I'm looking at.

if i had to choose i would go with the intel but only because i know what they can do and how good they are. i've never bought a amd chip, but then again i have only bought 2 chips in my life. but i do like the black edition ones and if you support then it will lower the prices for intel.

Go for the AMD. Intel blows.

And no, I have no rational basis for that statement whatsoever, other than that am sick of hearing about them and that recurring four-note Pentium sound that used to come out of my television every thirty seconds still comes up in therapy.

I cannot believe that I am going to say this, but I'd opt for the Intel--the AMD processor seems to have a bit of an issue regarding temps between the cores (variances between 10 and 20 degrees F).

Give AMD about 6 more months and they'll (hopefully) be back in the game.

We can hope for AMD

I would have to say Intel, even though I have an AMD in my computer right now...

I have never heard of this AMD temp problems... The Athlon X2 is a very stable system.. (phenoms on the other hand are not)
Speaking on strict performance stats, go for the AMD. I have an Intel in my system now, but it is a pretty high end one. That low end pentium thing would wilt compared to the black edition X2. Especially if you like to overclock the AMD has unlocked multiplier.

With either one I would plan on overclocking.... They are both supposed to be pretty good overclockers.. But which do you think would do better in games?

It's kind of a toss up here. The pentium e2180 really lags on gaming due to its small cache. When you overclock it changes dramatically. People have gotten this processor up to 3.4ghz! If you plan on that kind of extreme overclocking then you will get very good results. I'm guessing you know the risks of this much overclocking so i won't go into that..

On the other hand.. overclocking the unlocked athlon X2 will also yield very good results. It will be easy to overclock also..

the AMD is much, much better. Intel's core2's pwn but what you have there is a older chip and is pretty crappy.

That's not true. The pentium ghstbstr65 is talking about is not old at all. It is actually based off of the Core 2 architecture. The main difference between it and a Core2 is the smaller cache, and the lowered clock speed.
