TheBestCaseScenario Exclusive! I won't post this brief worklog anywhere else!!
Since I built my R2-D2 a few years ago, many others have been popping up. To keep the whole Astromech idea fresh, I'm changing my paint job, to RED thus becoming R2-M5!

Besides this and a purple R5, I dont think I've seen very many variations on the R2 spring up as projects. Cheers for daring to be different! +rep

About half way on one side is done.

Next are the legs which are the hardest part because the goofy shape is difficult to tape off.
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010642.jpg
For the first time the paint dripped a bit.

But it does look a lot better.

I worked on the front plexi window this morning. See my plexi bending tutorial in the Tips, Tricks and Tuorials section

http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/6399/p1010669ld9.jpg
Then I slid it in.
http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/465/p1010672ta3.jpg
Here's with a flashlight behind it.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6990/p1010673xc5.jpg
I'll take a pic with the floodlight installed behind the plexi once it's dark enough. (See my Floodlight tutorial in the tips and tricks section)

TIP: next time try painting the inside of the plex instead of the outside. this way it will prevent scratching as the paint is not exposed to outside your case. great work so far. looking forward to seeing this finished.
TheGreatSatan
04-02-2008, 03:15 PM
The paint is a bit reflective and I was concerned that the Flood light on the inside would reflect back inside the case. The matte finish on the inside will ensure that much of the light will push it's way to the outside.
To hold the plexi in place I added silicon on the inside. I need this sturdy layer here to hold my 5.25 drive cage in place.

Now for the weird to begin.
I knew this project wouldn't run smooth.....
The extra 2GB of RAM arrived
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010743.jpg
I have an Abit IC7-G board that I know can easily handle 3GB of RAM. Here's how I have them configured.
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/ram.jpg
I put it in and my BIOS recognized it, but this is far as it would boot????
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010744.jpg
Maybe I should have the RAM inter-mixed and that would work? I don't know, but I will try later.
And somehow my Compu-Nurse stopped working

I cut away the right size of sheet metal
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010762.jpg
Then painted it to match
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010764.jpg
Next up, I put foam tape on the drive door so that the stealth cover will only grasp the door
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010768.jpg
I then stuck the cover to the door
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1010769.jpg
Looks like I have to lighten the cover a bit.

I changed the configuration so that the RAM is mixed.
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/new_config.jpg
Painfully obvious now that I look at it--you've most likely got a dual channel motherboard--slots 1 and 3 are connected, as are 2 and 4. And with the board being dual channel, if you mix and match memory sizes, you get all sorts of interesting things happening, as you saw.
Wish I woulda seen this sooner, I coulda answered it right away.
+rep man, this is looking great!

I bought a NEW white keyboard. Let me tell you, white is a very HARD color to find that's not for an Apple. The one I found has backlit keys. I'm buying the mouse tomorrow. It's for a laptop, but it already the right color! (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/576740/V320-Cordless-Optical-Mouse-For-Notebooks/)
I'm going to paint the arrowed sections the same exact color as R2, except I ran out....so I'll get some soon.
