So... My school is having their own prom this year (it's a 240+ student school, our first prom ever) and I managed to convince the prom committee to let me wear a kilt.
Now, I figured I'd try to go in full Scottish formal wear. So I've but a few questions.
Shirts. Would a normal dress shirt be fine or is there a certain style that fits better?
Hair. I have long hair and I was wondering if there's anything special the Scots do with it for formal occasions. I was probably just going to pull it back or braid it.
Shoes and socks. Anything in particular? I was thinking just a pair of boots at first but I know how uncomfortable they can be for long periods of time.
I'm really helping DaveW helps me out here, because I know he knows. ;)
If anybody else knows please help!
Thanks,
Omega

You could watch the beginning of Highlander and get a few ideas? :D
Don't we have a resident Scot around here somewhere?

You could rent a tux jacket, shirt and bow tie, and then add the kilt, socks and strappy shoes like in this setup (http://www.tartanweb.com/shop/highlandwear/standard_8_yard_argyll_package_-_all_tartans.html). You should make your own belt and buckle and sporran (http://www.tartanweb.com/shop/highlandwear/sporrans/leather_day_sporrans/), and put a TBCS logo on it ;)
Dude just get to a thrift shop and you will find everything you need for real cheap--you can find a tux style jacket, shirt, tie--just be crafty and thrifty--go to a Salvation Army thrift store and you'll find gems that will make the outfit special. Doing it on the cheap and creatively will be the best part.
For instance:
The Sporran (wallet, purse, whatever)
You can find a leather purse or a small hand stitched leather bag and decorate it with tassels from and old pair of curtains--Also find fake jewels, baubles and just stitch them on or hot glue them. Make it unique.
the Sandals--simply decorate some leather sandals by lacing leather straps to them so it goes up the calf.. You can use a thin belt or leather boot laces.
get the idea?
and put a TBCS logo on it ;)
I LOL'D, sounds like a modders prom

Long stockings are usually worn with a kilt. Sporrens are commons amongst formal wear.

This was one of my brothers groomsmen during his wedding (I had to wear one too).
This is formal.

Yeah, I was conversing my prom wear with some classmates and we're all pretty sure they wouldn't let me take a longsword on board with me.

I've got a kilt, but what I wear is called a Great Kilt or Ancient Kilt, not the formal "short kilt" that your looking for.
Mine is 9+ yards of fabric that I have to hand pleat on the floor before I wrap it on.. Very comfortable and very utilitarian. (cool in the summer, warm in the winter, doubles as a rain jacket, cary bag, blanket, and tent)
