I am creating a part that is molded out of wire mesh, and I was looking for suggestion for a material to cover it with to create a hard outer shell.

I was thinking bondo but I didn't know how it would do with the mesh gaps. Also it needs to be water resistant so something like paper mache is out.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Fiberglass would be your best bet.

Would I need to create some sort of a thin skin between the wire mesh and the fiberglass possibly wrap the project with a thin semi-permeable membrane, to keep the fiberglass from sinking through the gaps.

was just reading the fiberglass tutorial actually...

Hit up wal-mart look in the crafty fabric area.
Pick up thin felt or similar cloth.
skin you mold with it, then use the fiberglass resin to coat it, just like you would
if you was making fiberglass kick panels. It'll be strong and you don't end up itchy.

Hit google for fiberglass kickpanel box's or speaker box's, you'll see some.
Like this it's just cloth and not fiberglass:

Please post questions in the Q&A section rather than the tutorial section. Thanks,
