I'm currently curious to what operating system people are using, and why that operating system. I was in another forum and noticed a lot of users doing their usual vista bashing routine which I can't understand....
I've used vista for about a year and a half now.... it's not bad, on older hardware, it can be a bit of a pain, but for newer hardware, it runs fine.

I'm currently using Windows XP SP2 and Vista (Home Prem on my desktop, Business on one of my laptops)

I have Vista Ultimate on (this) machine as well as Ubuntu.
My laptop has XP Media Center.

I have dual-boot of vista/XP on this machine and XP/Linux on other machine. Vista runs fine most of the time except for whe it comes to gaming I can gain about 30FPS in most games on XP vs Vista.

I'm using XP on my 4 main machines. And windows server 2003 on my file/print-server.

I've had Vista on my old laptop and it wasn't bad at all, but the older hardware made the system sluggish and slow. So I went back to XP just because it is lighter.

Also the server 2003 machine will probably (hopefully) be swapped for a windows Home Server machine in the future. My roommate had a home server and it was very nice. The problem is I need new hardware to run home server :(

I got Vista because when I built my computer recently I thought, "I could get the more stable and reliable XP, but sooner or later I'd have to upgrade anyway."
So far I've been very happy with Vista, although maybe I'm only saying that because I've come from Windows 98!

I've got XP because it runs fairly stable and I'm familiar with it... that and you can game on it. I plan on upgrading to Vista eventually but I don't have the cash yet.

I liked vista, but I just don't have the ram for it right now...

Also have XP64 on my wifes machine because go figure... it runs better and more stable despite what everyone else says.

My new laptop runs Vista, I use it it works fine generally except I have bad wireless on certain networks. On my gaming machine I run XP. It's more stable and customizable for the time being. I tried Vista for a while but it kept crashing my video drivers which is a no-go for gaming. My secondary laptop I use XP, it cannot run Vista and I want it as fast as possible. I use Linux for various projects and machines like severs.

XP and OS X at the moment. Used Ubuntu for a while some # of months back but since school started I've been using XP. I think i might have formatted my linux drive since i was thinking of installing Arch.

The main stumbling block for linux w/ me was that i couldn't figure out how to get java and what not working on linux. Im sure it probably wasn't that hard but i was feeling lazy and i had it all already working under XP from last semester.

Mainly using XP right now... I have Ubuntu 7.04 on here, but it doesn't get much use, mostly because I don't have the time to work out the kinks in the wireless. I downloaded 8.04 RC1 and tried the LiveCD version of it, and it detected my wireless out-of-the-box. I couldn't connect, but it's a start.

I've never had any problem (that didnt last for more than five minutes) with Windows Vista. That combined with the awesome UI, and I am one satisfied computer user.

Windows 2000 is my fave operating system. You are left in control of the computer instead of the OS taking over. I have it dual boot with XP (by neccessity for some software) but think XP stands for Xtra Poop.

Also use Ubuntu, which makes old machines quite nice and workable :)

... and have Vista on my Laptop which I rather despise frankly, especially as all the extra "security features" make it just plain annoying to use.

However ... all my puters are in crappy old England and I'm not ... so right now I use XP everywhere as that is what the library and internet cafes offer without exception.

Glad to be back :)

Things here have been completely screwed up. The day I deposed my claim for asylum the French President was in bed with the queen of England in Buckingham Palace which didn't bode well. I waited two months to see a specialist, yesterday, when I got there he cancelled the appointment.

Today I got the rejection of my claim for political asylum and it's hillarious because they clearly didn't even read the documents - purely political - they don't want to give an Englishman asylum when France is trying to cozy up to England.

I'd come to Canada Luke and make a claim there ... but then .. the Queen of canada is none other than dear old Liz so I don't rate my chances.

I may be moving on soon ... to Cuba. How does their flag look?

;)

Yeah, Ill admit that its not perfect, but neither is anything else. It still baffles me as to why apple thinks you should only be able to resize a window from the bottom right hand corner. Seriously, If you have the window placed in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, and you want to make it larger, you have to first move it then drag from that specific corner. And it irks me that there is no way to really go full screen w/ a window other than to drag it out as large as possible... of course then the dock gets in the way of everything. I still find the OS pleasant to use though.

Idk, I like to use a little bit of everything.

Resource hog, iffy drivers for some things (and it's been out how long!?!), and, to be honest, its slow as hell in some of my personal benchmarks that I've run--my single core Socket 939 XP running machine runs circles around my Core2 Laptop.

Vista has a lot of bells and whistles, but in the end, all it is is just poppin' the rag.

crenn

Can I point out each new release of Windows has needed more resources? ;)
The iffy drivers aren't fully vista's fault, more the manufacturers of the device. If you run a same benchmark on an older and a newer OS, then of course it's about to be different with the older OS coming out on time. However I will say this, neither OS is perfect. There are things I like about XP and things I like about Vista. I've seen the ugly side of both OSes and in same cases, XP is the only way if you want a usable system (I won't like Vista touch my home laptop) but I do like Vista and can't wait until I move my desktop to Vista permanently.

Yep. And Bill Gates said that 640k would be enough for everyone.

True, the iffy drivers aren't Microsoft's fault. But until these 3rd parties get their collective **** together...well lets say a *nix derivative looks more appealing every day. Yes, I realize that there's driver issues with *nix as well, but for what I need a computer to do, nearly any *nix can do.

Poorly written code is at play as well--my laptop has a Core2 and 2 gigs of RAM, and yet (and I'm partially at fault for this as I haven't gotten around to streamlining) I swear this damn thing take longer to boot than my ancient 3.11 486 (may it rest in pieces) ever did. Slower hard drives also factor into this--I'm not quite sure what the RPM is on my laptop's hard drive, but I'm guessing its 5200 RPM, whereas my main system is running 7200 RPM drives-a 2k RPM difference. But then again, I got the laptop for portability, not for performance.
Plus, there's a lot of self-gratification at play as well--if I can get *nix to do what I need it to do and be

crenn
05-06-2008, 05:07 AM
I'd recommend running a 3rd party defragger like PerfectDisk 8.
In the case of vista, many things are a factor to overall performance. Streamlining will solve some things. I found a lot of laptops take a couple of minutes to boot up.

btw, Laptop drive speeds are normally 5400rpm. Older ones could be 4200rpm.
If you want more tips for Vista, just ask.

I've recently acquired another halfway decent computer so I may upgrade my current rig to Vista and use it solely for gaming. I'll use the other one with XP or Ubuntu as a media server and everything else computer. That way I can get all the performance I can out of the gaming one.

Just an update I have installed Fedora 8 on my new laptop, for the time being it is dual booting between Vista and Fedora. I only really use the Fedora install though, only use Vista if I have to. I must note that I have better wireless internet under Fedora than i ever did with Vista, keep in mind that the Gateway was intended to run Vista.

Another random tip for Vista, if you're having problems with wireless networks (or any networks), go into adapter properties and disable TCP/IPv6 as it looks for that first (and sometimes doesn't look for TCP/IPv4). I've had a good amount of success after doing that as I had wireless problems.

I use Vista on both my laptop, and its not a bad OS. Just needs some polishing, but it does what I want. Light gaming, internet browsing, media viewing. I'm more familier with XP, but I had to upgrade at some point, so i got Vista anyway so I can get used to it.

Works for me, anyway lol

I haven't seen you yet, so welcome to the forums Katosen!

I know I already posted, but it's time for an update. I used to be mostly XP, light Ubuntu (bad wireless support). Not anymore! I just got the new Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 release and I'm loving it! Wireless out of the box, Firefox 3 Beta 5 out of the box, and more. Bye bye XP (for now at least).
