I have a set of ballistix tracers. They have the 30 or so really small led's that flash. But, they are red and oarnge and my mod is black and blue. Is there a way to easily change the colors to blue and or white leds, or cover them or something?
thanks, tp
The only way to do it really would be to physically remove and replace every LED. Not necessarily easy, but it will get the job done. Blue and White LED's run close to the same voltage/mA usage as red and orange, so you shouldn't have to worry about resistors (maybe a 1ohm if you need anything at all).

ive never used led's before. Are they expensive? also, these are really small so wouldent it be hard? is there a way i can cover it with something that would change it?
You know.. I should have actually looked at the product before posting before. I don't think there's any way you can change those without taking a risk of doing something bad to the RAM. If they were white, I would say cover them with colored celophane, but there's nothing you can do to change red and orange LED's. Regular 3mm and 5mm LED's aren't hard at all to work with, and are very cheap at ledshoppe.com. I just got 100 blue and 100 UV LED's from them, and it only cost me $14 with shipping.

These sound interesting but I can't seem to find pics of them in the Net, do you have a link?

Ooooo, those are pretty! Thanks.
(Odd that Yahoo search didn't find that image...)
As for your question, SgtM is correct, with those colors I can't see any way to change them at all.

The LEDs used in those stick of ram use SMD (Surface Mounted Devices) technology, this means they are small, and a pain to solder. It is possible to change them. However, as SgtM said, you risk damaging your ram in doing so (you also void the warranty on the RAM).

Hmm, nice. As for swapping the LED's, I wouldn't attempt it myself.
However... Is there a cellphone shop near you who changes LED's in mobile phones? They'll have the correct tools and skill to do it for you.

You just need a steady hand and some flux really. Altho SMD can be a pain to work with, it can be done with some practice. If you've never seen an SMD LED other then on a board heres a pic of 0603:

How big is the coin?
Roughly 3/8" You could fit those surface mount LED's on the tip of a ball point pen.

Sorry, forgot about the whole global site stuff... Here's the same thing next to a common iron tip:

Here it is again next to a 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm LED as well as a USB drive plug:

There are equal to about half of a grain of rice I would say.

I'm pretty good with working with them. That's what mods use in 360 Controllers and consoles. I've even used 0603 LEDs to light up PSP triggers. It can be intimidating to work with, but I was able to get used to it.

I can say ditto to all of that. The Wii also uses them. One you start using them they really are a great way to add lighting in suttle areas.

Every christmas at the mall there is a little kiosk where you can buy accessories for cell phones. They swap the number pad lights and almost anything else like that. I'm sure if you found a place that customized phones like that, you'd have no trouble getting them to change the LED's in your ram for a decent price.
