Hey, folks, me again. I've been looking at motherboards for a new build with an eye on future upgrades. I've found several with multiple PCIe 2.0 connections, and several that tout themselves with the term CrossFire.

I have to be missing something, because I thought CrossFire was the ATI version of Nvidia's SLI multi-card setup. I am buying an Nvidia card that supports SLI but want to be sure the board I buy will support it also (for when I buy the second card in the future).

So please go easy on the new guy and tell me what the heck I am missing here? :?

Crossfire is the ATi version of SLi... but a Crossfire motherboard won't support SLi unless it says so on the box/description/whatever. If you're looking for SLi than you'll have to go with an SLi board. ;)

The only motherboard that support SLI is one with an NVidia chipset, however there is 1 known exception to this rule, that would be the skulltrail boards which are very expensive.

also i believe there are hacks for some boards to run sli but not worth it to me.

but as said above it will not support sli unless its an Nvidia chipset (eg: 650i, 680i, 750i, 780i, 790i)

There are some motherboard chipsets that have hacks, but very few will work.
