You all who have done liquid cooling before. I am going with a Zalman reserator XT and was wondering if anyone has ever tried to see how far you can get the external pump from the computer tube length wise before you start to hinder performance. I was considering mounting the reserator on the very top of my desk and letting the tubes run down behind the desk and under it to the case, would that much tube affect performance considerably?

I've actually seen this done before, let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: Look here (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2618&highlight=show+PC&page=20) at the 2nd post down. To the right of his monitor you will see his desktop rad that he uses to chill the system.

Do you have any idea if doing it will kill the effectiveness of my intended set up though?

no, I can't speculate to the effectiveness. I would think it would cool better than traditional systems, yet depending on the volume of water and distance a second pump may be necessary to ensure good flow. Those are just my assumptions.

Thank you very much so far, maybe some other people who know more than the both of us will drop by.

you will have to look at the rated max head of the pump that comes with that. i doubt it will be very good as thats a kit.

with that in mind if you have the space in your case for a pump and rad i would go with that and custom build it. kits are a big no-no in water cooling, though there are a few that are good.

and i would think the kit will tell you/supply the max length of tubing you can use with the kit.

Is dumping a second pump into the line any more trouble some and complicated than it sounds, just hooking everything up? Is there any worry about making sure both pumps pump at about the same speed, or would it matter?

actuall thats a good idea, just get a quality pump then try to take out the old one. (at the bottem of the res/rad if i remember correctly.

if it would do anything i think the stock pump would make it a bit harder for the second pump if it can't keep up.

here is a great pump for the job you want.

What is the name of the type of pump? Can you use a submersible?

looks like the pump can do 1.8m lift acording to this (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=460&type=expert&pid=2) review/specs.

after looking more into the unit i would just rip the unit open and swap the pump with the one i linked to before.

the black box in the middle is the pump.

If you design a cooling system with two pumps, you could consider dual loops (i.e. each pump is a closed circuit) or run them in parallel. The one thing you wouldn't want to do is run 2 pumps in series because any difference in flow rates will equate to one pump acting as a resistor.

thats it, well put.

i would opt to replace the pump all together.

Hey not to thread jack but I don't know crap about water cooling and what to get so what would be good for this MozartTx (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133025) If I was to put it on the top of the case or the at least the water tank.

with that massive case you can pretty much get anything you want.

here is some really good stuff for cpu only cooling. it can handle and overclocked quad core with room to spare. the fans are 88CFM so they are loud and can be replace with medium/low speed yate loons or any other fans with a bit of performance decrease. or you can use a fan controller.

here (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9237) is a basic guide i made a ways back, should get you going in the right direction.
