It was technically released end of last month, but was pulled thanks to a flaw detected. That bug has since been fixed, it should be safe to download and install. But make sure you have a backup of important data.

I've had about 5 friends from school install it, and it nukes their PC's. It puts it into an endless loop and won't boot to the OS

Sounds like a great way to get people to downgrade to Vista...

The 'endless loop' booting happened to me when I updated .NET framework (required by a vid editing program) a few months back. wouldnt even let me into safe mode. It seems this servpack is simply all the hot fixes and security updates rolled into one, the same crap we've been updating for 3 years. don't need it!

I'll pass till I'm sure. I've also heard that SP3 has fried their NVidia drivers too.
already intergrated it into my install disc, haven't had a problem on any of my machines, i was using the beta on one before the full release was made.

Downgrade??? Vista is awesome if you know how to use it.
I was using the SP3 Beta as well from MSDN. Worked for me.
Vista is good to an extent, its ok soplong as your PC is very or fairly powerful.
I have vista installed on two machines and i admit it looks nice, but i always find myself falling back to XP and linux, I turn off all the fancy graphics the lot, i don't use them.

All the arguments you have against Vista were once used against XP. ;)

I'm going to wait, I've got no medium to back up, and schools almost out, ergo I have no free time to reinstate a system from scratch if it does "nuke my pc". Does it add anything particularly useful (i.e. dx10 graphics)?

And I was one of the last to finally (and grudgingly I might add) upgrade to XP. I ran 98 until 2005.
man after my own heart, the only reason i don't use 98 is becuase drivers don't exist for my machine,
I had a argument with XP and drivers having to fudge them to work, some are not even xp drivers.

I upgraded from 98 as soon as I could, never worked right for me. However I used Windows 2000 Professional for a long time, still do actually. It will run on almost all my machines that can't support XP (well at least the Pentium and newer, wouldn't try it on the 486s).
