Looking at a new motherboard and I can save quite a bit by buying one that has a PCIe x16 slot instead of a 2.0 slot. Does anyone know how much of a practical performace difference there is with these? Strictly for gaming?

well.... the quick answer: no i dont:/

but i do know that there might be some problems using a pcix16 for a 2.0 gfx card... one of my friends is right now having problems with his, and i would recommend that you bought a pci-e 2.0... no reason to buy old stuff:P

edit:

just got his card... i am gonna try testing it in my own rig when i get home... he couldnt seem to run it proper... ill keep you posted

I believe my 3870 is PCIe 2.0 and I'm having no problems whatsoever and I (think I) have just PCIe x16. By the way, PCIe 2.0 is twice as fast as x16. Just to be sure you could always check Wikipedia, lol.

PCIe2.0 cards are meant to work in PCIe1.0 slots, some motherboards have had issues, not all though. Best to research. PCIe2.0 x16 slots have double the bandwidth of a PCIe1.0 x16 slot.
