After a long time of being not so active in this forum i want to share our newest project with you, up to now we call it STORM.

We started a few days ago with this unspectacular big tower case (its not spectacular, but it has a removeable mainboard tray) which we got from ebay

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm1.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm2.jpg

Because its huge like a stacker we decided to build in some kickass hardware (we didnīt decide which hardware exactly up to now) with a big watercooling loop, 2 or 3 radiators (3x120 + 2x120 + maybe another 3x120) and 2 optical drives.

So at first we stripped the case down to its raw body to see how everything would fit and in which way we are gonna make the one or other thing....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm3.jpg

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm4.jpg
then we made 2 small mounting brackets out of some alloy stripes which we use to mount the radiator on the bottom of the frame. This was necessary to prevent the radiator from falling down on the next image :D and it prevents that the radiator could be shaked out of its position when moving the case.....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm5.jpg

as next we bend some alloy stripes into the right angles so that we could mount the 2 optical drives with them on the outside of the case....
beside that we also bended some of those stripes to hold another radiator in front of the case, then we painted everything inside white except the radiators they get a fresh black paintjob...
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm6.jpg
The Top of the case also gets a first cutout

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm8.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm9.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm10.jpg

one of the last things we could do up to now was to build a first water reservoir which will be attached directly to the pump to prevent it from sucking air....and to make the filling process a little bit easier....

I think that has some real potential. Nice work so far. Ther eis one thing that boggles my mind and i cant quite seem to wrap my finger around it. With such a monster case, why are you externally mounting your hardware? There should be more than plenty of room in that case for everything you mentioned.

p0Pe
05-12-2008, 09:28 PM
yeah it looks good! nice cooling potential:D

thechoozen
05-13-2008, 02:43 PM
thanks a lot!

@ j-roc... youīre absolute right....itīs a monster and normally there is enough room for a lot of drives.... but in this project i want a totally clean upper part (only Mainboard and Gfx visible) everything else should be mounted in the lower part.....the hard drives iīm going to use will be watercooled and needs some room for the cooling blocks....so that we decided to attach the optical drives on the sides to save this space...later when the projects is finished they will not be visible....but thats another step which will follow later on....

Wow, you have been away for a while. I loved A-51, can't wait to see what ya come up with here. Welcome back!

thechoozen
05-15-2008, 03:22 PM
thanks a lot jdbnsn!!

today we cut the sidepanels....first we cut the complete panel in 2 pieces

Then the both upper parts got their cutouts and holes so that we can mount a 2x120 mm radiator on each sidepanel. One of the sidepanels additionaly gets a few more cutouts which will be used as small windows....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm15.jpg

beside the cutouts we also cut out some acrylic parts in shape of the small windows which will be placed on the other sidepanel....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm20.jpg

For the inside we prepared a first cover which will be placed in the front part of the case, it will cover the pump, the small water reservoir and nearly all cables which will be needed for hdds and opt. drives....(atm its not fixed in its position that will follow later)

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm18.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm24.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm25.jpg

As last step we prepared a frame of alloy stripes which is screwed to the radiator on the front of the case

thanks a lot!!! itīs always nice to hear when others like your own work:D

today we build another radgrill for the radiator which will be placed on top of the case (another 2x120mm), after that we painted both in a plain black so that they will bring in some contrast to the white.

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm27.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm34.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm35.jpg

For the inside we build another acrylic cover which will be placed on the floor of the top part. Then we drilled a lot of holes in it to guarantee that the PSU can pull air through it.

in the last few days we couldīt work much on this project because of the marriage of my brother (he is working with me on this project)
but yesterday we made a little progress so here it is :D

at first we cut some Plexi Pipes (100mm + 60 mm diameter) so that we can use them for the real water resevoir which we will put in the lower part of the case, beside that we also made a top and bottom for it

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm38.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm41.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm42.jpg

then we made a side part for the inner cover

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm40.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm43.jpg

we also made 2 covers for the DVD Drives which we will mount later

in the last days we made some progress.....

first we made the last radiator / Fan Grill which we will use later, after building them, we put them in place to see if they fit in the way we want....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm44.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm45.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm46.jpg

then we cut a small plexi stripe and drilled in 20 holes for LEDīs, later we build more of them....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm47.jpg

after that we cut out the first part of the water reservoir stand, i think tomorrow we cut the second one....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm48.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm49.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm50.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm51.jpg

as last we prepared a part of the outer skin of the mod....therefore we cutted 32 plexirods in 25cm length so that we can use them later.....

@ CT itīs like Froop already posted, we is me and my brother, we do a lot of stuff together :D

@ Froop danke schön :D

today we made some further progress, at first we made the 2nd holder for the water reservoir and put it in place for a quick test....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm53.jpg

after that we made a plexi circle which will surround the fillport of the rez...

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm57.jpg

then we also made the first parts of the case feets...

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm60.jpg

after that we started to build the upper part of the front, therefore we cuttet a thin piece of wood in its raw shape and then we put a thick layer of building foam on it.......after everything dryed out we begin to give it a better shape...but itīs only the base for everything what will come later on.....

today we just build a few water reservoirs...

a good friends was in need of a new reservoir, because his old was cracked in the middle and he couldnīt use it anymore....
so we built him a new one out of some plexi pipe.....beside the rez for our friend....we also prepared a few for us and finished the first one

hanks a lot!! :D:thumb::rock:

yesterday we have started to cut out the lower sidepanels so that they fit on the frame without getting in touch with the optical drives....
so we made a fast sketch of the cutout....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm65.jpg

.... and then started to cut it out

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm66.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm67.jpg

after that we started to finish the main reservoir, therefore we drilled some big holes with the same dia the inner pipe has and put everything in place so that we can glue it together step by step....

Thank you guys!

today we used the pre cutted wood parts and build a small framework out of it....it will be placed under the case so that the radiator on the bottom can catch enough fresh air....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm70.jpg

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm71.jpg

beside that we glued the water reservoir together and made a small test if everything stays dry :D:thumb:

this is gonna be ONE KILLER HUGE mod!... did i +rep you yet? if not here we gooooo (mario voice)

thechoozen
06-03-2008, 03:07 PM
thanks a lot guys!!! :D

In the last couple of days weīre working on the PSU....after we test installed it, we wasnīt happy to see that there is not much room between the water reservoir and the PSU....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm73.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm74.jpg

so we thought why not put the PSU half outside of the case half inside....
therefore we made a bigger Cutout then the Standard PSU Cutout...so that the PSU can now be moved through the hole .....

after that we needed a new mounting for our PSU, so we did a little bit recycling and reused the parts we cutted out from the side panels. We cutted them in shape and bend some 90° Angles out of it....they are screwed to the mainframe of the case....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm76.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm75.jpg

then we bended some alloy stripes in a U-Shape so that we can attach them to the PSU and the 90° angles we already attached to the cage.....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm77.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm78.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm73.jpg

as next weīre going to finish the new PSU mounting and then we want to start the building process of the opening mechanism for the lower sidepanels.....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm83.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm84.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm85.jpg

after that we cutted the first 3 parts of the sidepanel mechanism....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm82.jpg

i think tomorrow weīre going to concentrate on the opening/closing mechanism so that we can show you how this will work....:)

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm86.jpg

then we attached the first parts to the case...

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm87.jpg

...just to see where we have to make the next cuts....so that the sidepanel can be opened completely

in the last days we were busy on planning another gimmick we want to place inside the front.....

therefore we made a rectangle hole inside the backside of the front....inside the hole we want to mount a small webcam....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm89.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm90.jpg

then we quick draw on the otherside....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm91.jpg

and put on a bit more bondo....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm92.jpg

and we cutted the raw video material we shooted up to now....so here are the first 2 parts of the video worklog....:clap:

in the last days we made some progress on the Holder for the Water Reservoir...

at first we bended the 2 Plexi Holders for the rez into a 90° angle

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm95.jpg

then we drill out some plexi circles....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm93.jpg
and cutted them into 2 halfs
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm94.jpg
.......at least we drilled 3 holes in all of them......then we put 3 plexi rods through the half circles so that we got an element which will be placed between the bended Plexi Holders for the rez....

in the last couple of days i did a little bit of engraving...not for this project....but its also nice....:D

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/ehgravur.jpg

on this project we also did some progress....

we add the next pieces to the front...this time we covered the optical drives so that they will be integrated in the final front....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm103.jpg

then we cutted out the next parts which will be used to finish the lower part of the front....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm108.jpg

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm109.jpg

then we also glued the pre cutted plexi rods together, sanded and polished both pieces ...they will later be used on the outer body of this mod

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm106.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm107.jpg

then we cut out the marked square in the upper part of the front....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm104.jpg

inside this hole we will place a webcam which will film the inside of an plexisheet which will cover the complete hole....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm105.jpg

This complete thing will be used as a next gen Input device....you can find more informations about it here (http://ssandler.wordpress.com/mtmini/)

we put the lower part of the front in place and fixed it in its position with some tape....so we can see where we have to file a little bit so that everything gets smooth at the end.....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm110.jpg

beside that we cutted out some triangles which will be used to mount the plexirod sheets on.....
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm111.jpg
http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/storm112.jpg
than we put the next part of the opening mechanism for the second lower sidepanel in place.....

in the last days we started to build a CPU Cooler....therefore we took 3 copper plates (from old cpu coolers) which we overworked....the first plate was prepared to hold the water plugs....the second plate only gets a cutout so that it can be placed in the middle....and the 3rd plate was milled with a grid where the water should flow through.....

soo today we made the first test run with a cpu under our cooler.....

and it was a good run:jawdrop::D:thumb:

first we tested how hot our cpu (intel qx6700) gets with our old cooler....after a few hours of vista + surfing the net we got a temps around 38-39°....room temp around 27°...then we played 1 hour race driver grid to warm it up....after that we got temps around 47-48°....

then we shut down everything and switched the cooler for our new one.....then we wait a little bit to give the water the chance to cool down...after the cooldown phase we power up the system ....then we checked the temps...30-31°...but the room temp has also gone done to 25°....so we run another hour of race driver grid and made the last temp check.....36-37°........i think for a first run itīs a really good result!!!

Oh another small update with the gfx cards....we tested them only a short time up to now but we could could stable run them on 720/1150 Mhz (620/1080 Mhz Stock ) we did a few benchmark runs without any problems .....fan on full power and the card did not reach the 60° ....the only limitation we found is our QX6700

today i got the message that the storm project gots a nomination for bit-tech.net Mod of the Month !!:D

beside that its time for a small update...in the last days we made some carbon fibre angles which we will use to mount 2 of the used radiators inside the case....they will later be placed inside of the lower case part...but that will come in the next days....

http://www.babetech.de/images/storm/stormradihalterneu1.jpg

we also started to build some custom mounting points for the case window, therefore we sanded the inside of the sidepanel and then glued (with j.b.weld) a few locknuts to the sidepanel so that we could later screw through the plexiglas from the inside so that there will be no visible screwheads on the outside....

yesterday and today we made some progress on the "Mounting Thing" for the radiators :D....
we attached the carbon corners to the plexiglas parts and also mounted them on 2 sheets of black plexiglas on which everything will stand. The Black parts will also be used to mount everything on the bottom of the case.....

beside that we closed some holes in the upper side panels which we not need anymore....as we were closing the holes we thought that it might be a good decision to replace the glue under the locknuts with something more solid ....like metal...so we welded the locknuts on....

then we stripped down the lower side panels to their raw metall and removed all plastic parts from the first build....

Wow this worklog has so many excellent tips and ideas in your great worklog which I will check again and again.
That builders foam looks interesting especially what you turned it into, I am so constantly getting amazed when I look through worklogs here, there are many worklogs I have not seen yet here, I'm gonna try and browse through them thou sooner or later.
Impressive plexi work
I love the cpu cooler it is just flipping awesome
the mouse looks cool
another cpu cooler?, did it perform better than the other one I would have thought the other would have performed better, but oh well still great:up:.
the fan mods look cool
the custom DDC tops = unreal but real lol

when I got to page 20 or 21 after about 3 hours of looking and reading from start to there I have to say I'm a bit confused, did you scrap the front and side pictured in page 10, I mean it looks brilliant and very functional but very very different, am I wrong or have you really changed the mod to something quite a bit different or is the front you made to be still put on it, sorry for the questions I just feel I missed a turning point or something lol.
