Hello Modders,
Froop raised a great idea earlier today. We would like to start a download section for hardware templates. The idea is if we can make a collection of ACCURATE models and printable templates of many/most common PC components, people could use them when designing their mods in advance and save some heartache. We would love for any of you who are willing to measure your hardware in metric units and post detailed diagrams here. Eventually, we'll figure out how to translate them into actual dimensions (feel free to solve this in a discussion here). Also, anyone with 3D program experience, we'd like to have a downloadable version of the sketchup (or other) file to use in CAD models as well. What do y'all think?

Excellent idea.
Agreed.

I guess there is already a site made by a bit-tech member who has compiled many of the 3D models, but what is still lacking are the printable templates. Let's focus on collecting scale templates and maybe we can team up with the other guy to share resources for both of our communities. What do you think?

I like this idea.
I'll see what I can measure tonight :D

I have a lot to add there... Let me find my mods backups

What do you guys think we should use as a format, someone mentioned .pdf files for acrobat. Any other suggestions?

I like .pdf
And I have access to Adobe Acrobat, so I could convert them.

I believe .pdf would be the ideal setup. I know for a fact that DesignCAD can save in .pdf format.

Pro/ENGINEER can also save .pdf files. If I can get in the labs at school I might try this, I say might because it's finals week and then I'm out for the summer.

I don't know what you mean. . Like printable models of hardware, or Like printable dimensions for fans, radiators, harddrives, ect. As a guide for placement and cutting?
Like This?

i think both would be great to have... hole templates for grills fans etc for laying out and full size of parts as well for those who would like to print off and make like a cardboard model

I agree, both would be wonderful. I was originally talking about templates for hole placements and such but it may as well be the whole package.

I dont have time for this ATM but come the summer when I have time I'm pretty handy with solidworks ;)

I don't know if this would help but i have about 200 of the sketchup models from the bit tech collection maybe we could post them here with the provided credits to the artists

well, it's not really necessary if he already has them organized it would seem redundant. I think it would be better to focus on providing resources that are not otherwise available. Then we could post them for the use of TBCS members and also extend bit-tech an invitation to use them as well. That way we each have something to offer.

o ok I am willing to help though, I really like sketchup and if i can help the tbcs community because of it then even better :-)

I think the .pdf idea is a good idea, but what happens if you are trying to design it in a cad software package, like autocad, solidworks, turbocad etc? I think the format should be .dxf -it can be printed easily and imported into most cad programs. Just my 2 cents.

but what about the people who don't have CAD programs?
If they're PDF, they can at least be printed out and folded to shape.

dxf can be printed

dxf can be printed
but can they be printed by people who don't have programs to read them?

I think the obvious solution is to have the templates available in both formats. Everyone wins that way.

We need to use a format that will be effective for anyone who wants to use the templates, and one that anyone can use to make the templates. For instance, if I wanted to measure my psu and make a template, I can't make one in any format that I don't have the software to operate.

Excellent point. And as giving as this community is, I would not be the least bit surprised if someone (or many someones) took the time to port .pdf files for those in the community who can view and use .dxf files.

I won't have any problems with a .pdf. In all honestly, it would make my life alot easier.
