Do you think anyone can Mod computers and become famous for it? Like, on the news, and not just internet famous....?

I'm planning a project that will be the most important mod of my life, that I could totally see making me famous for modding.

Even better, I will be sharing the project with the TBCS community. The project will get some work from me, then I will ship it to another TBCS member. They will work on it too and ship it again to the next member and so on.

Keeping the secret is KILLING ME!:dead:

If it is a team effort, such as being shipped around the Country/World, I bet you could get media interested in it and its progress. Sounds very interesting!

More coming. The Staff of TBCS are working out the details to make sure we can actually get this to work.

How do you make sure it doesn't get messed up when shipped? How do you make sure no one else undoes anyone elses work? Etc? Etc.

IIRC there have been a number of news stories run on various modding companies. But getting on your local news is definately do able. I doubt we will ever achive great fame or fortune, because as most people I try to explain modding to cock their heads at an angle like a dog trying to understand it. I don't think it is main-stream enough to ever garner true celebrity status.

Modding evolved out of the desire to break out of the "beige box" and while most people will have a computer, few will give more than a second thought about it's appearance or custom performance. I can defintely see some convergence between computer modding and hot-rodding as they are simmilar persuits. However I doubt it becuase the populations of those two groups are usually disparate and rarely compatible.

I won't rule out the idea of a forthcomming tv show "Pimp my PC" but I can't see it garnering the same wide-spread audience. The reality of the mod, is we do it for the love of the art. With any art there is potential for some sales (custom mods for game companies, running a mod to order buisness), but most of us do it for our selves and to share it with others.

I think we may have a case though to get us some exhibits in an art museuem or two as a temporary installation of practical art. I think that would be really cool.

Nope not a TV show. You're way off. It's Insane, just silly beyond anything I have ever thought of.

Very interesting... One of the forums my wife reads does a pass around of some sort of stuffed animal and they take a picture and send it along. But this would be way cooler.

Wasn't meaning that "you" would be making a TV show... just commenting on the general society trend to capitalize on niche markets with comercialized entertainment.

I guess my question would be what kind of fame does one seek?

Movie star celebrity status will be hard to achive especially because as many artists may see, if you are behind the camera, people rarely know your face to pick you out of a crowd.

Numerical fame is easier to obtain, but is often fleeting, (doing it better, faster, bigger, etc Guiness Book of World Records) few will ever seek to know your fame until they seek to out do you.

Peer fame, typically the most attainable and most realistic goal, reaching the top of a particular field, and being the authoritative subject to all who would endenture knowledge of the subject matter. The fame however is limited to the particular field it is in.
