NEC LCD Technologies today announced the successful development of a manufacturing technology that enables more flexible design of thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) panels (see some of the shapes). The prototype design, a "heart-shaped," low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) color TFT LCD module formed using two half-circular arcs and two straight lines, has a display width of 4.0 centimeters, height of 3.6 cm and pixel pitch of 174 micrometers (146 pixels per inch).

So could we be on the brink of the next great shop sign invention -- LCD's made to order?

...cool.

Hehe.. better than neon right?

Nah, nothing beats the classic hum of neon. Especially not some animated company logo blaring annoying slogans...

As long as it's quiet, I dont mind. :D

The follow-up:

Toshiba's develops circular LCDs

Toshiba has just unveiled its circular LCD panel. The display is 62mm (2.4-inches) in diameter, with an outer border of 75mm (3-inches). Apparently the thing is a proof of concept for new manufacturing technology that can produce an LCD of any shape, and the specs aren't at all bad with a 240 x 240 resolution along the longest lines, 500 nits of brightness and a 600:1 contrast ratio.

I was thinking more long the lines of a gauge cluster.
You could hang a tach off to the side of your monitor. :D

Couple things I noticed about the designs is that the rows run at various angles. It will probably be a limiting use factor because to move an object horizontally it won't be a straight x value modification but some trigonometry to move in both xy at the right angle.

Not game breaking but it would limit the conversion ability. (eg us modders buying one second hand would have to do an extra bit of programming to make something run on it.)

I'd be even better if they were transparant you could have LCD sunglasses.
