Here's the worklog. It's a community worklog. One that we'll all post our ideas, sketches and possible plans.
Personnally, I like the idea of doing a PC based on the Presidential Helicopter Marine One.
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/marine1.jpg
I like the green drab that reminds me of my days in the Marine Corps. I like the white stripe and the possibility of adding a helicopter blade to the top. Also, we can add the US flag and the presidential seal. That's just my idea, what's yours?

Airforce 1 would be pretty cool!

Baugh I was gonna post the Airforce one. :(
Who does the president work with closely? (Like the agencyies)
You could put something to represent each agency on there.
Crossed guns for the military, (fan cover?) a memory eraser (FBI) (MIB), etc.

I still like the idea of making it a detailed model of the white house myself, or that presidential seal Paul was talking about.

Want to get one of those 3D puzzles of the WH?

I dig the model WH as well.
Imagine the president sitting at his/her desk with a white house model on top of it that's actually... A computer! =D

i agree omega on that one. The white house would be alot easier than airforce one or marine one because of the size in refrence to a mobo

Oval shaped...for the oval office.

A case based on the Sea-King!? heh.. I work on these. I would go for something a little more president-ey. Like built into a mahogany desk, with a glass case on it (under the glass case is a big ominous glowing red button, under it the words "FIRE NUKES"... this would be the power button.)... Just an idea.

An odd one.
Does anyone know how to achieve a white house look? Should we us a case or go custom?

I think you can use a case... youll just have to make the front rounded part yourself. I till need to be a wider case too. Unless you want to make it of the full white house and not just that main arch part.
You can use a standard ATX case.. just set it on it's side so it essentially becomes a pizza box. I'm still trying to find pictures from my west wing tour. God only knows where they are. That was 8 years ago.

Im not very good at choosing a case but this one caught my eye.

It has a rounded front just like you would need. I can help more when it comes to parts, color, and lighting.

I think it would depend on how comfortable you are with scratch building a highly detailed model. A scratch built WH made from a skeleton case and lots of styrene panels would probably look best, but that is more time consuming and more on Paul's level of craftsmanship. You could get one of those 3D puzzle/fold up models of the WH to base your dimensions on though. If this is really going to end up being delivered to the pres, I think high quality modeling is a must, which means Paul may need to get very involved with the design. I know he stated that he was "in", but we need to find out how "in" he really is because he would likely be the best bet for the design.

its very, very tall... but its 13 and a half inches wide so that gives alot of space for the front of the white house
you could really even chop off the top half of the case because there isnt really anything important in their
or i would say a lian li pc 343 even wider than the tx not as tall but giant! 18 drive bays
shes beautiful imo it be a shameif we modded it lol
screw that mod it!!! http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=204&products_id=20821

for $499 we can get the White House Humidor and start from that--I saw this at JR Cigars--its made from resin and nicely detailed--the top is a lid that lifts up. Plenty of room inside. Can light up the windows too :)

Looks like we need a paypal donation goal.
Something to the effect of "We have received a total of $ in donations towards our goal of $499.
I saw one on fiberglass forums. Looked like a good idea.

Paul,
That is a great looking model, but do you have any ideas on a design to personalize it? If we just bought that model and slapped a PC inside it wouldn't be very original. I'm sure you could dream up something better than most, any ideas?

I'm cool with that model and a little PC work. I can start at $100 for sure.....donations would be nice, sponsorships would be better. :D
I have no idea how to get a sponsorship though.......

Here's a link that explains what usually happens to Presidential gifts. The President can keep domestic gifts, which is what this would be. But the President usually gets so many gifts that he never sees most of them.
I know the chances are pretty slim now, but if Hillary Clinton became president, a cigar humidor might not be the best thing to build a PC out of. It might remind her about what her husband did with a cigar the last time he was in the white house.

I've read that before. I was hoping to somehow get the local press involved. I'm going to call the local radio station that has a national show. Then it may landslide into the larger press and get to the Pres. After that, whether he (Obama or McCain) keeps it, donates it to charity, or keeps it as his Camp David Crysis machine doesn't matter to me.

i was reading that thing about the gifts for the president thing and it says that the president is taxed on any gifts he recieives and that theres a limit to how much a gift can be worth so i figure we should keep this sponsored bc that way it doesnt cost us money to make it and we could sorta loophole that limit thing i guess
idk im tired just a thought (i dont even know if what i just said makes sense but w/e)

I don't know what the plan is but if anyone is good at etching i think a round side panel window with the presidential seal etched into it and lighted up would look awesome.
I personally think we should keep more of a standard case design with serious mods done to it, so this is recognizable as a computer. I think it would be cool if the case door was made to look like the round part of the white house with the pillars, rather than putting a computer in a model of the white house. Just some ideas I had.

i think chaks is right about keeping it looking like a computer case
remember that we want to show them how a computer can actually be a canvas for artwork and modding etc and that you can make a generally boring looking box into something beautiful

That's probably a good thing. Bill might have embarrassed the country again with another intern.
I like chaksq's idea. The metal parts of the case could be colored to match Air Force One.

About getting this into the White House:
I talked to my dad who worked for the State of PA years ago and he gave me some good info that I need to share with you guys.
The White House is all about helping young people. Especially with projects that will show that they like the president. One of the thing we can do is contact the White House directly and talk to one of the Aids on how we can do this. They will give you input on how to do it. We want this to be a gift so we need to avoid the governmental intervention. Another thing we can do is contact the Party Office of the candidates and ask them if they will help with the "red tape" about making this gift get through to the new president.
So if we wanna do this, TGS, you should call one or both of these places and start getting this known out there. If they have questions later about it they can get back to you but its good to start now to know weather it is worth it or not.

will show that they like the president
I think you nailed it right there. I wonder if some of the gift obstacles could be avoided by presenting it to the _______ Administration rather than the pres directly. Someone should call the Enron folks and ask how to get gifts in under the red tape radar, I know they know how it's done.

Very good point. It would still be fun to mod a case as it's passed from member to member but I feel less people would be interested in helping if it wasn't going anywhere when finished.

You may have to make this one yourself or just with one or two other people, since everyone working on it will want to use it.
And my vote is white housed themed, lots of pillars and columns.
