I've been thinking about the choices I have for my "scratch-built laptop" build, but can't seem to make a decision about whether I should buy a $150 laptop screen, or mod my lcd screen into the build instead. So what would YOU guys choose if you were in my shoes?
Desktop Monitor
Pros:
Free instead of forking out $150.
Build would be finished that much sooner.
Cons:
Wouldn't be a true laptop, but more of a portable pc.
Heavier than a laptop monitor.
Bulkier than a laptop monitor.
Laptop Monitor
Pros:
True laptop, therefore does not need a power outlet to use. (aside from charging)
Would help slim the over-all case down that much more. (probably a good 3 inches lol)
Would probably be a bit lighter than a desktop monitor no?Cons:
$150, 'nuff said.
It would take that much longer to finish the build.
You can see my dilemma. Both have equally persuading pros and cons. lol

Thats where I was going to go (ebay) to get one if I decided to get one. ;)
I've googled for replacement laptop screen many times, just wondering if Eclecticos knows about something that I haven't ran across before.
Anyways, most of my search results from ebay for a laptop screen runs from $150-$250. Which is where I got the "$150" in my first post.

I'd buy a 15" TFT on ebay for like $30 and strip it down. Even add a touchscreen feature. Kits start somewhere just ove $50.

You know, I was actually thinking about that. About the 15" instead of the 17", as the 15" is much cheaper than the 17" (which is a complete load of bollocks if you ask me, its just 2 inches more! Make money where it can be made I guess...).
Thats an interesting idea too, some kind of touchscreen feature. How would that work though? I can't think or imagine how that would connect to a laptop? USB maybe? If its done through USB that would be perfect for one good reason and I'll tell you why...
Because I've busted the pins clean off of the mobo for where a laptop keyboard would plug into, I couldn't figure out how to get around that problem without having an external keyboard of some sort. But then I noticed something. There are two USB areas, one in the back of the laptop and one on the side, each have two USB ports stacked one on the other. The USB ports in the back are connected directly to the mobo, BUT the USB ports on the side are connected to the mobo through a wire extension! So I can put those USB ports from the side of the laptop anywhere I want, such as INSIDE the laptop. Then I'll just get a regular USB keyboard, mod it into the laptop so it looks nice and proper, and have it simply plugged into a USB port on the inside. ^_^

Voted for the desktop.
If you tear down the desktop lcd, you will find that the monitor PSU drops the voltage to the lcd. If you could figure out the power (not that tough), you could probably find the power in the laptop to light it up without an external cord.
BTW, what model LCD, I may be able to find the schematics to get the voltage.

How would I power it up do you think? I believe a laptop monitor is powered through the same cord that connects to the GPU, I could be wrong about that though.
...I wonder if it could be powered through USB? lol I'm still trying to figure out what I can use that second port that will be on the inside of the case for my keyboard, since my keyboard only takes one port, I have an extra.
