View Full Version : The Best Tasting Beer?

For those of you who can drink legally and those who do it anyway, beer has it's place for us all. Many of you younger guys drink to get drunk no matter the kind of beer, you mostly pick the cheapest you can find. But for those of you who have actually taken the time to smell the beer, look into it and taste it slowly letting it settle on your tongue before you swallow, know beer differently. What beer TASTES the best to you?
So far I've been working my way to tasting every one of Sam Adams 20+ beer choices. Of those my favorite is probably Cream Stout, but I'm still trying them all.

It truly depends on the situation with me--summertime calls for weizens, alts, light belgian beers and good German or German style lagers; fall calls for pumpkin (of course) and cranberry (if I can find it that is), along with English browns (Black Dog Ale is one of my all time favorites); winter's selection will be of a higher alcohol content--Wheatwine, Barleywine, Imperial Stouts, etc.
Springtime, however, is my personal favorite--Scottish Heather Ale, Black & Tans, any good stout that isn't too high in alcohol content, Traquair House Ale ($5 for a 7 oz nip, but OMG is it worth it), and Irish Reds rule the house here.

Sam Adams Boston lager for me. Though I do like a pint of Guiness every now and then. When I need to go cheaper I go with Michelob. Not the Ultra, regular. Can't stand the Ultra. tastes like water.

It's not "Keystone Light" I'll tell you that much! uck! So much for my first beer experience.
Does all beer taste so awful? I'm afraid to try any more. lol
I've heard "Arrogant Bastard" is supposed to be pretty good. My father and uncle drink "Henry Weinhart", not sure if thats any good either, but they seem to prefer it time after time again.

LMAO! My first beer tasting experience was about the same.
Occasionally, I like a Big Rock honey brown. I enjoy going to the local beer store and picking a few random selections of beers that I haven't tried before. Of course, I also have a favorite for when I'm drinking with a purpose. ;)

Beez Neez is pretty good.
Also cutting the flem on a Carlton Draught isn't half bad either.

I like beers that have some body and strength.
Currently I have a case of Anchor Steam in the fridge, next to the keg of Blackthorne.
For a lighter beer, Stella Artois has a great flavor and goes down easy on a hot day.
For a regular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is good. (I took a Keg of this to my friends 50th birthday party on Saturday)
When I want more of a meal, I drink Guinness, or for a lighter dark beer an Oatmeal stout.
...and yes Arrogant Bastard Ale is a good one but I really don't care for HW...

I am a die hard fan of Corona Extra (with a lime in the bottle, of course). :)
My WORST beer experiences were Pabst Blue Ribbon and St Paulie Girl. :dead:

I beg to differ I am from the the country that is the fourth largest beer drinking country in the world. I do enjoy mixed drinks and sometimes just shots. But you obviously haven't tasted enough beers.
Also what is the average alchohol content and number of standard drinks in the US? For beer here I think it is around 4.8% and like 1.4-1.5 standard drinks.

beer in Canada is i think on average 5.5% - 7%
but yes i think i've only ever tried maybe 7 different beers, but all tasted horrible. one was guinness, one some coffee beer thing (probably the least offensive of the lot), labatt. thats all i can think of but for now my favourite drink/shot is creme de caco with vodka. (1 shots worth each, maybe a little more creme de caco). i got halfish drunk off them with only 5-6 shots.

Just tried a beer called "Sparks".
It basically tasted like an energy drink with a slight taste of beer.
If it wasn't for the alcohol content (as is required for Beer Pong :p) I would of just stuck to an energy drink. But its definitely drinkable if your new to beer and/or do not like the taste of beer.
White beer? Sounds interesting....
Not nearly as interesting as the yellow beer my buddy gave me one time...
wait a minute...

Ah, a beer thread. I know a lot of people like to point out all of the great beers that arent 'crap' and the people where all beers are 'crap'.
But really, what I look for in beer is the recreation. I go to a party or have people over pretty often. And no one really wants to spend money on 'good' beer. So we stick with the cheap beers, and most often light. So what do I think is the best beer that my friends and I enjoy a recreational event? Generally a Bud or Coors. But lately MGD 64 is a crowd favorite. Its light, goes down easy and most people that dont like beer will drink it.
In my personal fridge I have a little of anything people bring over. Red Stripe, Shiner Bock, Smithwicks, a few MGD 64's and a micro brew or 2.
I dont think there will ever be a 'Best Tasting Beer'. But if you do your best to find out the little beers from your local guys, you'll tend to learn a lot about beers and will find all of the new option to you.
The best tasting beer? The one you refuse to try.

I love beer. My first beer tasting experience was a brand that to this day will make me puke if I have even one sip of it. I just had to try a different type of beer to realize how great beer tastes.

Fosters?? As in this Fosters (http://thenotoriousosc.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/fosters.jpg)?
Please tell me there's a different type in England, cos that stuff is a joke in Australia.
I guess if you like it (somehow) that's cool, but it's really unpopular here (at least amongst all the people I've spoken)

So I've heard. It still amazes me.
I guess it's a matter of opinion. From what I've heard of it, American beer sounds pretty bad to me, but obviously it's pretty popular amongst it's native audience. Just a matter of personal taste, no matter how strange it may seem.
yes thats the fosters here in the uk, Aus beer brewed in the uk under licence, like carlsberg and hienaken are brewed in northamption in the uk! and there forigen beer!

In the USA, the Fosters that we get is actually brewed in Canada under contract. And due to a technicality, it is considered to be an 'import'.
A one dimensional, uninspiring, bland tasting, makes Budweiser look like nectar of the gods import. Blech.

Since you asked Simon275, I usually go with a Carlton Mid, Tooheys New or sometimes a XXXX with ginger beer. I don't mind the Becks either, but thats not a usual tipple of mine.
And Ichbin, beer is just called beer in Australia, though really cheap and nasty stuff (like Fosters) is often called 'piss' (pardon the language).
Also, any Aussies here had any experience with Little Creatures? I have a mate from WA where its brewed who swears by it.

Guiness or Harp Lager are by far the best I have ever had, of course having Irish heritage may have something to do with having a taste for darker beverages. Although I will almost always have coors light in the fridge. There is a local out of the way place that has Guiness on tap. I also have had a lot of local microbrews and red stripe. I love local brewers they seem to put more in there beverages.

...Although I will almost always have coors light in the fridge. ...
I always giggle a little when I hear about anyone drinking Coors. I grew up not far from the brewery in Golden Colorado and my friends and I used to swim in the river above where they pull their water from. Or should I say Priver... (remember the ool joke as a kid?)
We called it Rockey Mountain Piss Water for a reason...
That said, I used to always go on the brewery tours there when I got to leagl age. They used to give you a mug when you showed up and you could taste different beers as you walked through the plant. Not sure if they do that anymore.

Good call Eck. That's one of the better mid sized brewery beers.
Too bad the closest place that I can get it is on the west side of the Rockies. Go figure.
Anyone try A-B's Beach Bum? For being made by a large brewery, it's not too shabby either.
hobgoblin and black sheep are nice,
not strickly beer but atm im drinking apple & blueberry juice with vodka, Very nice.

Still am pretty new to beer here, I've only tried a few and I'm sticking mostly to ales for the moment. Out of the stuff I've tried that I've liked is a local pale ale with a slight nutty aftertaste, this (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/697/4770) red rice ale and I just tried Franziskaner's Hefe-Weisse. They're all pretty good to me, but the microbrew is my favorite right now.

I know that my dad will often get hackerpshore, if the place has it. Haven't been able to try any beer for myself, though.
really the best beer is all down to personal taste, if you like it, drink it (Responceably) if you don't, then just don't go throwing it,
And just don't forget "NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE"
