Are there any Eve online players about? I am thinking of getting into it. I have being reading a lot about in game tactics and mechanics and I think I am ready to take the jump and do the 14 day trial. Any words of advice?

I played for about two and a half months and it bored me... it's a little slow when you first start off.

Ok my characters name is "Aliactor" if one here still plays hit me up.

Update: Ok so I have done the tut and I bought a better ship and some upgrades and have had the game open in one desktop on ubuntu and have my ship mine while doing homework on another desktop. I like how you can set your character to train in a skill then logoff so your offline time isn't wasted.

Are missions a better way to make cash? as mining is gonna take me a while.

The missions are alright... they seem to get repetitive to me, but I only played the ones you get in the start.

Ive had my account for nearly 3 years now. as someone else said it can get boring quite fast if you arent careful. Mining is probably the best way to make money, but it takes a lot of time, patience and credits.

They just dropped an expansion that introduces factional content. I havent been in game to find out what all the hoohah is about but I hear it takes the game to a whole other level. Graphically I dont honestly think it can be beat(cept by AoC maybe).

Also without know what race or corporational faction you started with its hard to say where you should train your skills.

I highly suggest you start here: http://evemon.battleclinic.com/

This program will let you play with all your skills. It will tell you how long it will take to get to what level for ships, weapons, etc etc. I dont know however if it works in linux, but I have no doubt it does.

One tip about mining, dont do tin canning(dropping a can next to a roid and using it for storage until you can haul it), because its open to anyone to grab from. Sure youll be able to shoot at them, but with you being at such a lower level youre sure to get blown to hell.

The help channel is also a great place to start, ask any questions and get familiar with the people of EvE. Theres a very small community that are really asshats, most everyone in the game are pretty cool(unless youre an enemy).

Good luck

Yeah about the tin can trick... I have a friend who makes tons of credits stealing those from dim wit miners...
