Crimson Sky

We have the opportunity to upgrade our ageing server to a newer model, and we will be doing so June 20-21st.
What we have now:
P4 2.8GHz
1GB RAM
HDD-1: 120GB
Hdd-2: 250GB
The Upgrade:
Dual Core Opteron
2GB RAM
HDD's 2x 250GB
Please EXPECT the server to be down sometime Friday the 20th starting in the evening. We will have splash pages up as a reminder. The Forums will also be UNAVAILABLE during the migration. Thanks for hanging in there!

Yo Paulie! hehe sorry, always wanted to say that... (I know, I kill me)
Do you spec the HW or take the upgrade they give you? Can you add your own parts? Such as memory or drives?
Being a hardware geek, I just had to ask. If 2&3 are yes, lets talk...

Hah! almost no one calls me Paul--it's either Paulie or Pablo. :)
I just basically saw a special they had advertised, for $10 more a month I can get the upgrade--Not sure if its a package or they can do a la carte type server slap-together. I'm sure they are flexible. what ya have in mind?

The pile of server memory sitting on my desk at home could be put to use... ;)
I also may have some disks. I will check my inventory (I also take into account several spares for my home systems). 250's and 500's...
ONLY for a good cause like TBCS though so no trolls... hehe

Okay, if my current desktop can wipe the floor with our current server I'm all for an upgrade (and consequential downtime).

With the server outages I'm having today, the upgrade is seeming like a good idea!

Yes the outages were happening yesterday and today for me to. The posts I made on my worklog are not there any more, I will re post them once the upgrade is complete, saves me having to post them a third time.

The upgrade has nothing to do with experiencing less downtime. In the 4 years I've been with this hosting company, the server has been down very briefly about 5 times. That's an extraordinaryly good record.
The most recent outtage had nothing to do with the server ;)

Dave! Stop prodding the server!

lol nice xcom.
I thought there was something a bit more powerful then a P4 holding this place together.

Here is what I've been offered by the hosting company, for just a few bucks more a month:
Dear Paul,
Thanks for talking to me yesterday. Apologies for the delayed reply. Monday turned out to be a bit too hectic.
Here are the two options for servers we can have online for you anytime.
Dual-Core Intel Xeon 1.6 GHz
2 GB RAM
2x250 GB HDD
cPanel/Fantastico
1500 GB Bandwidth
Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 180
2 GB RAM
2x250 GB HDD
cPanel/Fantastico
2000 GB Bandwidth
Your currently monthly bandwidth usage is around 200 GB.
Please let us know which option suits your better and we will get working on this.
Sounds like a good deal Paul. When I had my server, it was $350/mo, and not near as powerful as what you're being offered. Although, I did have what was considered to be unlimited (unmetered) bandwidth, 2500GB/mo is pretty much the same thing.

Honestly I don't know which one is a better choice

Opteron processors have better memory bandwidth, but either server will work.

Can we get a model number on the Xeon? Either of them will do great for the server. Having been in the server game for a while I am probably partial to the Xeon. In my experiences they have been rock solid, but since we don't have any Opteron boxes I really don't have a reference. The extra 500GB/Mo of bandwidth is really nice on the Opteron option but pretty much irrelevant for this site, since we average around 200GB total.
So if the Xeon is either the 5110 or the 5130 I would put my vote in for it, its core is built on newer tech which is along the Core 2 lines, whereas the Opteron about a 2 year old CPU.
Just my 2 cents.. would like to hear what the others have to say

I agree with OvRIDe. Those Xeon's are built on newer tech so in my book they would probably be a better option in the long run.

QUESTION from hosting company: Do we want to move the Data ourselves to the new server, or for $100 they will take care of it? Please advise...

Its not that hard to migrate....

IMO, migrating isn't too difficult (relatively...) but I've only ever moved non-vital things and it did take a while...
For me, my server migration was:
dump databases
copy /var/www to new server
import database dump into the new database server
double check that nothing's broken.
however, if you're not as confident with this, it may be better to pay the extra to have them do it for you. YMMV, etc.

Opterons are rock solid too and the 180's run at a stock speed of 2.4 Ghz so you may find better performance. I'm no AMD fanboy either so don't go there.
$100 or DIY migration? Personally I'd pay the money and go out to dinner.

You could just gablargarapraprapgrkayttrebcvx3wtyetncvbyuafdahahj gfdcv .
that should help out the shakes (I had them myself, my typing might be a bit garbled).

Could this have anything to do with all of the news posts being reposted in the forums?

Not that I know of, but I am not exactly sure why those posts surfaced. I suspect that the staff in charge of the front page may have been tweaking some settings or something.
