any suggestions for a good temp monitor to check on the processor? I download Core Temp from a link on the CPU-Z site. i doubt it's accurate as it shows core#0 at 2C and Core#1 at 16C. I really doubt thats my current temps at 5% load.

i got vista running on a 2.1 g 64 x2 4000+ on stock heatsink and fan. No intake our exhaust fans on the system...

There are many different programs, and hardware for this. The best software monitoring cpu temps is sometimes included on your motherboard drivers, and utilities disk.

I use Dr.Hardware (http://www.soft32.com/download_66410.html) myself. I liked it so much I bought it.

You could also try CoreTemp (http://www.download.com/Core-Temp/3000-12565_4-10794077.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10845305) or any of the other large range of programs for this purpose. Or you could get yourself a FanController/Temp Monitor. . From Ultra or one of the other manufactures.
