As some of you know, I work the overnight shift. Two of us do my job. The rest of the people working my shift in my work area do other jobs. One of those other people came in late today, and when their boss asked him why he was late, he said (get this), that he had gotten so much sleep at work the night before that he coudn't sleep when he got home, so he got to sleep late, woke up late, so he was late to work.
I'll repeat that, as it bears repeating: "I'm late to work tonight because I got too much sleep at work last night."
While I have to admire his honesty, I also have to think it was the raw honesty found only in the company of simple stupidity.

well where do you work? I know at the Reach regional dispatching centers they have 4 staffers on at a time minimum and during the night shift the dispatchers are allowed to take turns napping. If it's a normal night, they'll all get a good amount of sleep just in the nap rotation.
Reach, btw, is a medical air services company. The Santa Rosa headquarters deploys aircraft for California, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada, as well as a few counties in other states.
Four people do this.
Also, the computer rigs are crazy. Four screens per terminal and all the screens are filled with info.

I work at a large transportation company, and sleeping is not allowed. (Wouldn't have been nearly as funny...)

At least he's honest.
I've only had to do a 'night shift' once... was last year when I had a contract, 2 laptops needed to be done the next day, so I spent all night doing them for the 2 employees.

Man I've got some CRAZY! night shift stories...
Being one who has heard a lot of excuses (and made up many myself), I would give that guy's excuse 4 on the lame scale. If i was the boss I would have made him squirm until he fessed up to an all night binge...
(Anyone remember the name of the show that had the long haired guys reviewing stuff and they would all start chanting: "lame lame lame lame" while throwing their heads forward and back?)

I once worked a grave shift when I was at Telus. There were two of us.. one guy went out for a smoke break, and got mugged! They took his ID and his keys and stuff, so he couldnt get back in. *doh*
He managed to convince security that he was an employee, but man, I almost had to work the whole shift on my own, with no breaks or anything, and it was a crazy busy night. :(

He should have been let go right then and there. "You need to sleep at night? Go home and get all the sleep you want."
Hijack away, we can turn this into the "night shift stories" thread if you want. :)

Must be nice to be able to sleep in shifts. I know there are nights here when there is absolutely NOTHING going on, and it would be nice to take a break.

I'd say he should be fired.
I work as many nightshifts as I do dayshifts. I work in a mine, and my team consists of the same people whether we are days or nights. About 95% of the time, we have a lot better production on night shift than we do on days.
Luke122, you're in Olds aren't you? Please tell me that didn't happen there.

I used to work the odd nightshift. It was sooo easy.
We made some large control panels, which had to be environmentally tested. Basically this meant running them at elevated temperatures for 12 hours at a time. This couldn't be done during the day as the opening and closing of factory doors would disturb things, so the hot cycle was done overnight.
If there was anything else to do at the time, such as working on another panel, then I would do that as well, but mostly I was monitoring the temperature and writing letters to my g/f half way round the world.
Pity there was no net connection back then...
We'd sometimes order a takeaway, which would be delivered right to my desk!
Never slept though.

His boss probably did not even realize what the dude just said. He probably did not really hear the words and just dismissed the excuse as pure BS.
at my place of work we can't sleep even if theres nothing to do,
The night shift always seems to be more productive than day shifts, i always do nights if there on, its normally the same crew, its asif its in my contract written in invisable ink, but i like it.
last time i got told the night shift was for one week, six weeks later i was still on the night shift, Nights again next week! YAY
