Which is the best performing X48? is there going to be much of a difference between a DDR2 and a DDR3 board? the board i was considering is the ASUS Rampage Formula, http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=640&l4=0&model=2070&modelmenu=1 , but it uses DDR2 which is my only concern. Is it worth going for a DDR3 board and 4gb of ddr3 1800 or going for the rampage formula with 8gb of ddr2 1066 for around the same price? this is going to be a 4870 crossfire system and will be built soon, though i am willing to wait if there is something great coming soon in a couple of weeks, otherwise just current parts.

If you're wanting top of the line, I'd suggest waiting until the end of the year. However if you can't wait, but can afford it, look at the DDR3 boards, if not, the high end X48 boards with DDR2 are fine. Just remember next gen for Intel, it only supports DDR3.

thanks for your help, decided to go with the ddr3 on this board, the ASUS P5E3 Premium http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=640&l4=0&model=2069&modelmenu=1
For the memory, is it worth forking out almost double the money for memory with 7-7-7-20 timings over memory with 9-9-9-24 timings?

You won't notice the difference too much if you're gaming. The lower the timings is better, but sometimes it's not worth the extra cost.
