This was something from the staff area that I had to share. I still have a copy of my CB operators license somewhere. I used to have 3 radios, one in each vehicle and one in my apartment... My generations IM...

Breaker breaker good buddy, got the blackwater thumping and the chokes in the tummy. We be breaking wind on these shaky sider's all the way to Alamo City, then up to the Mistake on the Lake by way of Hog Country. Snowshoe's on standby since big charlie's on a fox hunt and I don't need pink wallpaper.
This windjammers cuttin' the cable, 73's to the xyl, 8's to the seatcover, out.

I agree Jon, the front page articles are improving quite a bit. Some good talent.

Heh, I used to be into CB, back in 1979/80 when it was still illegal in UK.

My handle? Christmas Tree (hence the username)

Best song ever.

Thing's awesome. Do people still USE CB? I think it would be fun to have if people still used it at all.

I think it's mainly truck drivers, and some hobbyists that use it now.

Whats the point of talking like that?

It's due to the nature of the radio frequency that CBs use. "OK" can sound like any number of things if the transmission gets garbled along the way, whereas a "10-4" doesn't sound like much else.

Trucker ten-codes (http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/1608/page6.htm) share some similarities with police ten-codes (http://www.phreak.org/radio/tencode.html) as well.

Not legal in the UK? WTF?

DonT-FeaR: I too was raised by a family of truckers. My adopted mother still has a photo of her dad with his first truck. He was lighting the headlamps...

I was also taught to drive by my trucker uncles and grandfather. Every time I pass a car on the freeway and don't move back to the right, I still twitch from being smacked in the back of the head. I also have the habit of turning on my lights on every vehicle I drive even in broad daylight.

Not legal in the UK? WTF?Yep, it was illegal at first, but thousands of illegal rigs were smuggled in and were fairly easy to get hold of, if you knew who to ask.
Then, due to the obvious demand, it was made legal but on different frequencies, and FM rather than AM. So the new rigs couldn't talk to the old ones.

Cool thanks, I will have to read that info.

"Snowshoes" refers to an illegal rig broadcasting way more than legal power. Basically one of the rigs I had I could talk to anyone in the US, Canada and Mexico from Colorado. Uncle Charlie paid me a visit one night and since I saw them coming I dropped the radio into my downstairs neighbors window. They searched my house all night and could only find legal systems. They knew I was putting out power though since they were monitoring me for at least a week. I was only 13 at the time so they couldn't do anything to me. My mom however was pissed! She made me sell all my gear. That she knew of.

When I was in the Navy, I got my General Class Ham Radio License and operated for years out of Colorado. Kind of got bored with it and sold all my stuff when I moved to Bong Leach... Er ah, Long Beach...

Well, Convoy was on the radio yesterday as I was driving to work, and I remembered this thread and my quest to find Convoy GB (that link's now broken, here's another one (http://members.tripod.com/~Cybertrucker/convoygb.htm)).

So, here you go:
